In the graphic novel, I don't think they really ever mentioned that he was burnt; I mean, we never got to see his hands, like in the movie...so in pre-movie canon, it is possible.
I also think that when Delia was talking about his eyes...well, it is a possiblity she couldn't see them because his face was so dark, since the flames were behind him. Otherwise...if you watch that movie and pause it in the right spot, you can definately see his eyes.
