This is my old lancer rifle, the very same image, just re-rendered, I added a few more objects, now the count is 83, and I used materials with nodes...Edit: updated file to newest version
Edit 2: Increased rifle width

Actually, now that you say so... I think you are right... it shouldn't have the same width of the flash hider... actually I tried to fix this 2 years ago, but I just couldn't make it look right... I'll try to fix it right now : )

Very nice! You may consider using edge split to make the machined parts look sharper.

It would probably help on the flash hider and sights. Anything that should look sharp rather than smooth would be could to add the edge split modifier to.
