Yay, His Dark Materials fanart...! Of a sort XD

Ya'know how there are all of the different worlds mentioned in the His Dark Materials books, all points where fate branched off and made a new dimension? This boy comes from a world that's halfway between Lyra's world and Earth. It's like our own world in most every way except that human beings have Daemons.

For the uneducated (and I didn't make this up XD) - Daemons are like an external manifestation of your soul. They take the shape of an animal, can speak and reason, and can't move more than a few yards from their human partner.

Typically, daemons are the opposite gender of their human partner. However, in this world, gay and lesbian humans have daemons of the same gender. So if a boy is born with a male daemon, his parents know he will grow up to be gay. This can be a two-edged sword... on the one hand, there's no worrying about 'coming out' to your parents. But on the other, some ignorant parents will still attempt to squash the gayness out of their kids when they realize they're going to grow up homosexual.

Abdiel (a Hebrew name meaning 'servant of God') is one such unfortunate boy. From the moment he was born, his parents have been trying to turn him 'straight', even before he hit puberty and had to worry about it. His parents are ardent conservative Catholics and think homoexuality is a sin. Abdiel is ashamed of himself and tries to do as his parents wish, but obviously, can't. When he was younger, he would have terrible fights with his daemon Menachem ('the comforter'), and thus Menachem has a complex because his boy, his soul-bound partner, hates him.

Once Abdiel hit puberty, Menachem attained his permanant form as a serval. He and his human don't fight anymore, but when meeting new people Abdiel will still try and hide Menachem's gender. These two get picked on a lot by the other boys at the uber-conservative all-boys Catholic boarding school Abdiel attends, getting shunned by the nuns who run the place, verbally abused by the holier-than-though students, and sexually abused by other gay (and sometimes not) older boys also attending the school.
