Its name comes from a variation of the words Gas and Ghastly

This Pokémon is made up of poisonous gasses which can induce fainting. It is nearly invisible, and can maneuver itself into any place it wishes, though it is easily blown away by strong gusts of wind. Due to this, it chooses stagnant places (like deserted houses) to make itself home.

In medieval times, Gastly were a favorite among rogues and assassins who would use this Pokémon to discreetly deal with their targets and provide reconnaissance, as they were almost completely undetectable and attacked with deadly efficiency.
