Mailbox, oh Mailbox
how you torment me so!
Your shining grey surface
so alluring to the eye
Your geometric squares
perfectly proportioned
You bring joy in the anticipation
of finding the crisp corner
of a pure white slip of happiness
protruding from your mysterious depths
As I round the corner
my heart leaps with unbridled joy
I pause to let the moment
seep through my skin
I approach—
hand outstretched—
waiting for my destiny to be revealed
I peer into the darkness
will my soul be complete?
No!
Oh mailbox, how could you?
Did this mean nothing to you?
You raise my hopes
only to crush them under your shiny grey feet
I thought you contained the answers
to life’s persistent questions
Alas, it was not meant to be
