when i turned thirteen, i went over to my boyfriend's house to celebrate.  he said he had three surprises, and he was saving the best for last.

one.
we entered his room and he held out a pair of golden, heart-shaped earrings.  they were hearts to symbolize our love; we had dated for two months but we knew it was true love.

two.
we sat on his bed and he picked up his guitar.  after trying to distract me and avoid what was coming, he admitted he was holding the guitar for a reason.  he then sang me a song, my song, by-him-about-me.

three.
we sat in silence, but it wasn't awkward.  i eagerly anticipated his final present, promised to be even better than the two prior.  he laid me down and kissed me, and then i received it.  my third and final gift.

when it was over, he asked if i was okay.  i lied and said yes.
since when was feeling a girl up on your bed in your parents house romantic?
in the car, my mom asked if i was okay. i lied again, yes.

no.
on my thirteenth birthday, i learned three very important things:
teenage boys think feeling a girl up makes her feel loved.
      i have no idea how to say no.
