Copic markers... <3 I have wanted them for oh so long, and this Christmas, my wish was finally granted! Two copic sets!!!! Yesterday I came back home from a weeklong vacation and went straight to work testing out my copics. I gotta say, though I was really intimidated with em at first, they ain't too hard!!!Given I didn't follow any tutorials and just experimented myself I think I got the hang of it pretty dang well, color blending is really natural to me it seems.. Strangely.
Well the first sketch was Tracie shooting a Bazooka, mixed feelings, the blending doesn't seem very much, well, there, too solid. The gun looks awful, but the energy ball emnating from it looks sweet. The attempt at the gun lighting his body is just pathetic, and unfortunately I didn't get the hang of that still, I am gonna need to do some serious work on lighting.
Another attempt was made on the shell, legs, and eyes of the Isotex beneath Tracie, the result is a washed out ugly mess that I ain't proud of.
The second piece I made was Sharon riding upon the back of the Remorod, Something about the coloring on Sharon feels off to me, but I did get the hair down right I think, unlike Tracie's. The Remorod adult however is freaking amazing. I am so unbelievably proud of him, the lighting on the front tentacle limbs is a bit weird though, that, and a few smudgy areas aside, he rocks. I love his little chin. <3
Then next came Princess Crush firing a claw laser. I adore how she turned out, the body looks great as does all the coloring but I am deeply ashamed with myself for not using her as another template to experiment with lighting.
Then came Natalie and here is where I believe I finally mastered the blending, the transitioning all feels smooth, though I need work on skin tones. Her hair was a pain however, I am amazed that I managed to fix the incorrect colors I initally used. She looks just like she should!
And lastly was a cute little Squish stamp to fill out the page.
With this out of the way I believe I can now actually put these babies to the real test, making actual pieces. <3 Expect great stuff.
And also, a certain comic will begin coloring stage soon.

Ah, you use Copics too? They're great, right? I've got about 20 of them, and about fourty or so Prismacolors. I want the Copic 72 Set B so bad, but they want an arm and a leg for them! I think what I'm going to do is buy Prismacolors individually (I can get them at $2.11 each), and supplement additional harder to find colors with Copics. Anyway, what are your favorite colors so far?
And, you're totally right - that effect for the blaster cannon is made of win! How'd you do it? I'm working on a technique for falling meteors, but I still haven't gotten it *just* right. My patience is being tested on that one. >_>///
Great job!

EEEK!!! I'm frankly amazed my father was so up to the idea of getting me the seventy two set for Christmas, but god am I thankful for it. I wish they didn't dry out so quickly though.... XD
My favorite color is Warm Grey 09!!!! Because two of my characters, Ace and Sergeant Galaxia both wear black, and in my first Astronautical comic you can REEEEEALLY see I struggled to make their black clothing look actually black, but at the same time try to retain the wrinkles and creases in their outfits, and it looked like crap. XD Now with the 09 I just draw over the lineart and it is the PERFECT color!!!
And that blaster cannon? Believe it or not it contains no blending techniques or anything really extreme!!! I just actually used them like ordinary markers xD Used one color and make a circle, then used another and make electrical currents coming off of it.
Falling meteors? OOOH!!! Are you trying to get the flames due to breaking the atmosphere on the meteor?

I know! They do dry quickly! But, you do know that they're refillable, right? You can buy refills for almost all of the colors at Blick for $5.99 each, and one bottle can refill a Sketch Marker 8-10 times. You can also buy replacement nibs for the sketch markers, but I haven't found a place online that sells them yet. Blick didn't have them the last time I checked, but they usually add new items every few weeks. So, you might want to check back often. C:
Really?! That cannon looks awesome! I'm going to try to replicate it when I'm finished here. It looks really awesome to not have any blending techniques! Aaannnddd, yes! Falling meteors! I've been trying to get the flame/smoke combo just right, but I haven't been able to get it just right. Plus getting the clouds' reflection right has been really hard. Guess I've just got to keep trying!

Yeah don't worry I know. xD I actually already have had to buy three, just from making Astronautical Episode 2!! I don't see how they dried so quick, and I actually dried up more and just haven't bought refills for em yet. I have a local place called Pizazz that sells em, scrapbooking place.
I still am debating on how to handle these markers, with great power comes great responsibility, I don't wanna become a monster. On one hand I love the way that my adult Remorod (shark) in this particular thing came out and that's without an outline, but, sometimes I need an outline yanno? And sometimes I don't even wanna blend I just wanna shade by going over the areas that'd be dark and whatnot yanno? I dunno I guess different techniques for different moments and pieces. Keep working on those meteors I'm really curious to see what you're drawing that involves meteors! (hoping for a space alien girl attached to a meteorite!)

Ah, that's great! My local art store doesn't carry the refills, so I've had to be extra careful when I use the markers, as to not dry them out. (I did anyway!) Have you considered what type of paper your coloring on? The paper itself might be sucking out too much of the ink. You should be able to purchase marker paper at your local art supply store. It's designed to take to markers better than just regular printing paper.
Hmm. I'm not really sure how to use them properly myself. I've found that if you're coloring a large area with a single copic color, you're sunk because they dry out. I've read somewhere online that you can re-wet a marker with some type of alcohol (if I remember correctly), and as long as the marker still has pigment in it, it should color again. But, I'd research that before I tried it, because I'm really not sure myself.
I've found that if you're coloring a large area, the Prismacolors are better, because the nib is a lot broader, and can stand being used more than the brush nib on a Copic. If you ever find one on clearance, try it out! The color selection is a lot smaller than Copic for sure, but for the price, it's really worth a try.
I'm looking here in another tab at your Astronautical comic, and I think I can recommend something to you! A T-Square , if you don't have one. It's a ruler with a guide at the end, so that you always make perfect panel lines. It's a total lifesaver, and more handy than a plain-jane ruler.
I'll keep working! If I come up with something cool, I'll shoot you a note and share! C:

I have not yet found the proper paper, I got lucky enough with Episode 2, I was scared it was going to be destroyed by the copics and bleed and spread everywhere which it didn't (printer paper). Though when I attempted blending you can see the paper would not tolerate that, look at the coloring on the Anemoweed Queen in the later part of the comic and you can see her vine flesh coloring spreads into the background and her petals, that's the reason most of Episode 2 is flat coloring, I really had no choice. I screwed myself over drawing it on printer paper. But I like how it came out. For other stuff like a piece I started yesterday I just draw in my school sketchbook, which the teacher never makes us use,the paper's thick naturally so it helps.
I agree on the quick drying nature but it's yet to really pose much of a problem they somehow still blend very well even when dried. Also I don't have a problem with not having a wide nib given the sketch has that bigger end, it really covers and area quickly!!! Though I would hate to know how much ink that spends... xD
And as for the T-Square that's a splendid idea, I actually have been challenging myself with that question since my comic book days all the way back in elementary school, I never use rulers or t-squares to make my panels I don't really know why it's like I like the personal effect flaws and ugliness give. It also attributes to my love of traditionally animated films as opposed to the ones made by computers now I love em both but I can't help but prefer the gritty and ugly nature the older stuff can hold, a good example would be the first season of The Simpsons. I think for episode 3 I'll use my t-square as an experiment, it'll probably make the comic a lot better looking.

I particularly like the blue sharky guy. The shading is awesome and I love how there's no outline.
I can't say much about improvement as I don't even color let alone shade my stuff. So I'm no help there.

Yeah he absolutely is the best result on this page in my eyes, though the blending is a bit messy at certain parts, particularly his front tentacles. And yes I was astounded by how good it looks not using an outline!!! You can tell I really liked it, cause Sharon riding him has an outline while he doesn't, I initially was gonna outline him too but changed my mind when I saw how good he turned out. Yet at the same time I can't imagine using that permanently...

LoL yeah. (Btw sorry for withholding my videogame count, it's been out for a few weeks now and I'm waiting to hear what you have to say about it but I kinda assumed you left for the holidays.)
It's better than what I can do that's for certain. :Ua

How are you better than me? >_<||
:1 Moving on... this is absolutely gorgeous! I thought you would be good at them, but I didn't expect you to rock this hard. xD Try to do harsher shading ok? Like use some more dark colors to get a good rounded looking picture.
It is kind of worry some to go way dark since there isn't a way to turn back, but I think you can go above and beyond even this!

How are you still saying that is the better question! xD
You're so encouraging ma'am thank you so much, I agree the darks don't come off as well as I had wished, they did well on the Remorod but stuff like Crush's shadowy sections, well, you probably wouldn't be able to tell I actually went out of my way to make them darker if I didn't tell ya..
I will keep on experimentin!

RKLAMDSA! Too kind too kind! Thank you so much!!!! I must say I am amazed at how naturally it came to me, it still is kinda awkward when it comes to lighting effects though... it is gonna be difficult figuring out how to make something like a green or red laser light cast properly and mesh properly with say, a black t-shirt.
