I'm trying to figure out what's going on here, but so far all I've got is "something really cool..."

The funny thing is, that would explain the blue color, the hexagons (ice crystals) and the fact that it's deflecting/absorbing a solar flare, if it were driven by "coolness" as in cold.

It actually reminds me of the alien craft from the short novel "Usurper of the Sun"
It has to do with an alien technology that is based on Nanomachines that make a giant ring around the sun, effectively cutting the sunlight that reaches Earth out of balance and resulting in overall chaos and turmoil for Earth.
Its a good read, I would recommend it! And it has a female protagonist too.
