Behold Scala's biological parents, in all their snakey glory! I've had an idea for their appearence about them for a while now, but I never had anything written down, so bear with me, I don't have all the details about them yet. Also I know I've used this set up and background a couple times now it just works!

Anyway. . .

What is known is that Gareth was the mightiest of monster hunters, challenging the largest and deadliest of creatures. It wasn't at least ten times his height, it wasn't worth fighting. Such arrogance cost him his arm, which was replaced by an armoured prosthetic, but that didn't stop him. His nigh lunacy was reigned in by his wife, the sorceress Rhian. She was an oracle of sorts on a remote island, using her power to help others and protect them from danger. When her magic failed her against a mana-eating cyborg sea serpent, Gareth appeared to save the day! Tired of traveling, he settled on the island and the two fell in love.

The island wasn't so remote as first thought, as it was off the coast of a large sub continent, called the Crystal Kingdom by some. It was a focal point for magical energy, causing large crystalline towers to grow among the jungles and deserts. Some took it upon themselves to harvest such powerful mana crystals, but the sub continent was home to the most dangerous and wild of mutants, such a thing Gareth took interest in. The island's business swiftly shifted to collecting and selling crystals, turning its humble seaside town into a port city. The little island prospered under the rule of Gareth and Rhian, but it sadly wasn't to last.

The Orthodox, always on the watch for threats to their power base, learned of the crystal harvesters. The believed non-humans were invaders and unwelcome on their planet and they having such power was a clear sign that one day they would rise up and attack the Orthodox. To squash them utterly (and to start harvesting crytsals for themselves), they sent a large expedition force to deal with this perceived "threat".

In the fighting that followed, the island burned and was reduced to ash. Of Gareth and Rhian there was no sign. Their child, still in her egg, was carried off unseen by a family friend, another sorceress. What became of her is another tale entirely. . .
