To be fair, if it had been the imperials in that situation, they would have killed them all.
It was a single population of rebels, and it was during a 6-way war, so of course the Tau had to do something about it. Any others would have bombed them into dust, or worse. I'd honestly prefer being painlessly rendered infertile than being killed in a horrific, torturous manner, probably involving being crushed under rubble or burned.

It's not hard to be the nicest guys in 40k. You just have to be a bit less terrible than the others, and I'm pretty sure that the Tau are at least slightly less terrible than the others.
Farsight Enclaves is the only true nice place, but they're so small and weak that it's basically grimdark as well.

The Tau race (war hammer 40000 universe) don't have a nose. They seem to breath through their facial gill. Funny fact : Female Tau have a 'Y-shaped' gill which allow to identify them on the battlefield (Tau armors aren't that skimpy so there is no other way to)
