Description
A collaboration between myself and ArteausBenjamin Mattinyahu Goldstein, born 1922 in Warsaw before his family moved to New Jersey four years later, which at the time had a thriving underground community for Jewish Lemurian Fishmen strangely enough. At a young age his great grandfather saw the potential for thaumaturgy in young Benjamin -- and so he was inducted into the sacred kabbalic mage arts. He would follow the discipline until the United States entered into the Second World War against his family’s wishes. He shipped off with a cadre of rabbinical magi, under suspicion of the mistreatment of Jewish citizenry at the hands of Nazi Germany.
Goldstein fought in the vanguard of some of the deadliest battles in the war, his efforts were key in stymieing Nazi mage-corps from participating in the war effort. The experience also opened his eyes to the broader nature of the magical world. Once witnessing two men one gaunt and dark haired, the other with white eyes and a flaming sword, back to back holding a hill at the Battle of the Bulge against what seemed like a never ending tide of Nazi abominations.
During the battle, the lead Rabbi of the cadre was slain along with two canters, passing lead of the remaining battle-mages to the young Goldstein -- and introducing him to his erstwhile ally, the Golem of Prague, which he proceeded to use to great effect. This proved his great grandfather’s suspicions about his innate talent ultimately correct.
Unfortunately for poor Benjamin, the rumors of mistreatment were true, after aiding in the liberation of Dachau where he vowed to never let anyone harm his loved ones or hurt his people ever again.
After returning home, Goldstein finished Rabbinical school with the money granted by the G.I. bill extended to him through the Meta-Human Association Act, put in place by President Truman. However, Goldstein suffered to find his place in his faith and struck out for the west, finding gainful employment as an actor. Unfortunately the intense lights in the studio tended to dry out his skin and he found the work humiliating. Though proving an immense success and providing much needed cash to fund his future endeavors, he would later refer to “The Creature of the Black Lagoon” of which he was the star as: “Trite Monsploitation schlock”.
He later moved to Canada where the City of Haven, a sanctuary city for meta-humans was in its nascence. He met the love of his life Miriam, a fellow orthodox lemurian, there and the two were quickly wed before setting up as the Rabbi of the local Synagogue. His only child, David Goldstein was born shortly thereafter and the family lived in relative peace as the city grew under the protection of its mysterious benefactors. Much to his parent’s consternation, David caught the same itch for adventure as Benjamin and traveled the world before finding a human woman, Ginny, who accepted David as he was.
Despite trepidation Benjamin gave the two his blessing and was overjoyed when his granddaughter Rebecca was born into the world. The joy was to be short-lived however when a militant human purist group, incensed by the blending and tainting of the human genome by what they viewed as less than human, managed to kill Ginny and mortally wound David. Though he had come from a powerful lineage, David’s first and last expenditure of magical talent was to cry for help to his father. Riding that magical call, Benjamin wove a spell that would make the ancient practitioners weep with envy, putting in all his effort to fly across continents to aid his dying child.
In a heartbeat the Rabbi Goldstein stood over his son’s cooling corpse and weeping infant granddaughter in the height of his rage. He had failed the oath he had made so long ago in the grounds of Dachau, and worse yet, had lost something that was beyond price -- his own flesh and blood. In his righteous fury, he destroyed all of the attack elements of the Humanity First group and any trace of them to this day are just hushed whispers, spoken of in fear of the Rabbi. Goldstein gathered his son and daughter-in-law and gave them a proper burial in an orthodox cemetery before raising Rebecca into adulthood. But even she is beginning to show signs of the wanderlust so prevalent in his heirs, the Rabbi tries to keep a close watch on his granddaughter, forbidding her from being away from Haven for longer than 2 or 3 days and even then she is under constant warded protection.

If it weren't for one solitary element of nonsense, this blurb above would a sober and uniformly accurate outline of a storied career - anyone who tries to convince me that the heart of American Fishman Life is anywhere but Lovecraft Country New England cannot command my unqualified respect for their scholarship!

It's still there. The Lemurians just don't get along with the outpouring of R'lyeh/ Bad blood so to speak.

I love this post, not just for the JoJo reference but for the world Building. I definitely would like to know more about the Goldstien family and this world. Would love to see some follow ups to this.
The most basic of course would be to see Ben during his time on the movie set of the Creature of the Black Lagoon. Especially if he bears a fishy resemblance to Ricou Browning, because let's be honest, he was pretty hunky back then.
The second is that there is actually some old Polish legend of people coming from the sea. Most noticeably the sea bishop that came from the sea and was brought before the King of Poland in the 16th century and was eventually released for being a peaceful, thinking creature. You could have that being a major turning point of history that had King Sigismund I welcome Lemurians into the kingdom as fellow Children of God. Of course while the legend just has the fish person knowing Catholic dogma and rituals, no reason to say they couldn't have sea Judism beforehand or picked it up once coming on land.
Of course now I'm seeing his polar opposite a fish man Catholic priest that they meet and get into heated theology arguments every Saturday night, and because of that are best friends. Then you'd just need a Lumurian Minister to complete the joke!
