"Your highness, we risk invasion every day unless we act now. We need to form alliances and prepare our soldiers." The deep voice of the man, standing on the opposite side of the massive old wooden table made Leander look up from the map he had been studying.
Searchingly the prince met the steady gaze of Blueregad, his guardian. Unlike most people in Leander's presence this man did not avert his eyes.
With a soft sigh the prince turned his attention back to the map that showed Irrandr and its neighbors, a soft rustling of feathers when Leander stretched his wing.
"It doesn't look good does it?" He asked with a dim weariness in his voice.
"No it doesn't your majesty" Blueregad agreed and bent over the map as well.
"We can safely assume that we are safe from the south, the largest threat comes from the east but I fear that others might grasp the opportunity to expand their borders."
He clipped his shimmering wings as he spoke, delivering the information in his usual matter-of-facts voice.
"I sent a letter to the west, but they are asking for too much of our recourses. Forming such an alliance would be the same as surrender." Leander's voice sounded weary and tense.
With a frustrated groan he left his spot by the table and went to stand by the window, the sharp eyes of the guardian followed his every move carefully but the man remained silent.
Outside the sun was setting.
Deep in thought he placed his hand on the cold stone wall beside the window and drummed his fingertips absentmindedly on the hard material. For a long time Leander stood there by the window, letting his mind wander, motionless except for the drumming of his fingertips and an occasional rustling of feathers as he adjusted his wing.
Suddenly his hand went still and he spun around, eyes blazing with determination.
"We'll have to continue this meeting another time Blue. There is something important I have to do."
After announcing the end of the meeting he strode across the room to the door and flung it open. In the same moment he heard a squeal, a heavy thump and shattering of porcelain.
Surprised Leander stepped outside the room and perked behind the door.
"I'm sorry Rex. I didn't know you where there. Are you hurt?"
He asked and reached out a hand to help her up.
She looked up at him blushing and with a shameful look on her face, but she quickly turned her gaze away. With his help Rex got to her feet.
"I'm so sorry!" She blurted. "I was gonna serve you tea but..." Her voice trailed off and she went silent.
"Don't worry about it" The prince said and patted her friendly on the head before turning and hurrying down the hall in the direction of his study, leaving Rex and Blueregad starring after him.

In the study Leander paced back and forth by the window. The candles where already lit and the quill lay by the parchment on the desk, waiting patiently to be picked up.
On the floor lay a big siamur curled up and watched him steadily with his sharp eyes for a while but when nothing of interest seemed to happen he opened his beak and yawned, he lay his head on his front paws, closed his eyes and soon fell asleep.
The prince continued his restless wandering, glancing at the desk every now and then.
After a while he finally sat down and picked up the quill, dipped it in the ink and begun writing the letter.
