Kalina smiled softly as she watched her son play with some of the other foals in the snow. Bacchus was still young, but he was already showing signs of one day being a very kind and compassionate stallion. He was always making sure that all of his playmates were having fun and that no one got hurt while playing. And if anyone felt left out, he made sure to correct the issue and include them. All of the other mothers always told her how impressed they were with his behavior.

Lost in thought, Kalina almost missed seeing Amora and Silvia coming up beside her. Both mares also had gentle smiles on their faces as they watched the foals play.

“They make a great little group, don’t they?” Silvia murmured as Rana and Ophelia chased each other through the snow, Bacchus and Anterus cheering them on.

“They do. I admit, I was a little hesitant at first to allow Anterus to go and play on his own with the others, but Bacchus and the girls have proven that they are responsible and will watch him,” Amora said. As she spoke, Anterus grabbed onto Bacchus’s tail, the darker foal easily leading him so they could catch up with the fillies.

“He’ll make a great lead one day. You should be proud Kalina,” Silvia said.

“I am. Even though he is not of Ryder’s blood, he is his son in every way that matters. I see so much of Ryder in him,” Kalina replied.

The mares stood together, watching the foals play. Every now and then, they would murmur something to each other, but mostly they were content to watch the young ones play. Then, something caught Kalina’s eye. A flash of movement through some nearby trees, some color against the white snow. Immediately, she was alert. It was not out of the question that a predator could be stalking the foals. Winter was hard for all creatures and made some desperate enough to try anything they could to survive.

“Over there. Through the trees. Did you see it?” Kalina whispered, pointing the movement out to the other mares.

“Yes. What do you think it is?” Silvia whispered, ears pinned to her skull.

“I don’t know. Come. Let’s get a little closer to the foals. I want to be nearby in case something happens,” Kalina whispered as she started moving towards where the foals were playing.

Snorting, Amora said, “I don’t like this. Anything could be out there.”
“Or it could be nothing. Let’s watch for a while. No reason to panic the foals and stop their fun if there is nothing to worry about,” Kalina soothed.

All three mares moved in closer to the foals, keeping an eye on the treeline. None of the foals seemed to realize that there was anything wrong and kept playing. Kalina did her best to focus on both the trees and the foals, but it was hard. Did she see a flicker of movement? Or was it her mind playing tricks on her? She didn’t want to cause a panic, but it was hard when she didn’t know what was out there.

It was as she was staring down a part of the treeline that she heard the foals start to make a bit of a ruckus. Swinging her head back around, heart pounding, Kalina was a bit confused at first about what she was seeing. Bacchus and the other foals were in a pile, legs going every which way. But, as she counted heads, there were two more heads than there should have been. Who were these foals and where had they come from?

“Hey! What did you do that for!” Ophelia shouted, struggling to get up.

“Sorry! We didn’t mean to run into you! We slipped and couldn’t stop!” one of the new foals, a dark brown, nearly black, filly with jagged white markings apologized.

“Yeah! We saw that you were all having fun and wanted to join! But, while we were running, we hit a patch of ice. Sorry about that,” the other foal, a dark gray, nearly black filly said.

“It’s fine! As long as everyone is alright, you have nothing to worry about,” Bacchus said cheerfully.

“Yes, as long as everyone isn’t hurt, it’s fine,” Kalina said as she walked towards the pile of foals. “But girls, where are your mothers? Or other members of your herd? Surely they didn’t let you wander off on your own?”

“Oh. Uh, we don’t know. Where’s Starfire?” the dark brown and white filly asked.

“I dunno. I thought she was right behind us,” the other filly answered.

“GIRLS! THERE YOU ARE!” a loud voice shouted from the trees.

Turning, Kalina saw a chestnut mare with a yellow mane and tail and a white belly come charging through the snow. This must be Starfire. The chestnut mare slid to a stop, spraying snow everywhere. Even before she came to a halt, she began to scold the fillies.

“How many times have I told you not to wander off?! You could have been hurt, you could have been eaten! I turn my back for one second and you’re gone! What do you have to say for yourselves?!” Starfire scolded, ears pinned.

“Sorry Starfire,” the fillies chorsued, chastised, heads drooping.

“We just wanted to play,” the dark gray filly sniffled.

“Yeah, it looked like fun. We didn’t mean to cause trouble,” the other filly whispered.

Starfire seemed to deflate at that, all anger vanished. Sighing, she said, “Well, I can’t be too upset. It did look like they were having fun. But you should apologize for causing these mares trouble.”

“Oh, it was no trouble at all! We’re always happy that our foals are making friends. But, should we introduce ourselves?” Amora said cheerfully.

“Oh, how rude of me. My name is Starfire. This is Cadence and this is Azem,” Starfire said, gesturing to each filly in turn.

Nodding to the other mare, Kalina said, “My name is Kalina. This is Amora and Silvia. And these little ones are Ophelia, Rana, Bacchus, and Anterus. If you would like, we’d be more than happy for them to continue playing with Cadence and Azem.”

Starfire looked conflicted for a moment, but then she looked at all of the foals’ hopeful faces. Sighing in defeat but smiling, she said, “If you’re sure that it’s not an imposition, we’d be happy to.”

“Um, I hate to interrupt, but would you happen to have room for a few more?” a voice called from behind them.

As the whole group turned to look for the source of the voice, Kalina saw five more horses behind them.

In front of the small group was a mare. She was a soft brown color with a white blanket on her rump, brown spots breaking up the white. Beside her were two other mares. One was a dark brown with dapples and four white socks. The other was a dark red with three white socks. Peeking out from behind the mares was a pair of foals. One was a white colt with red chestnut spots all over his body. The other was a filly with a brown body and a darker face and legs, a white stocking on one back leg and a sock on one front leg.

The first mare spoke up and said, “My name is Chaz. This is Beanz and Blaise. And these little ones are Cornflake and Sabina. We saw everyone having fun and foals begged us to join in. Maybe they could all have a playdate?”

“Of course! The more the merrier!” Kalina exclaimed.

The foals that were peeking out from behind the mares shouted in joy and rushed to join the other foals. Within seconds, all of the foals were playing together like they had known each other for ages. The mares laughed and joined each other. They spent several minutes talking and getting to know each other as they watched the foals play. Of course, having so many foals playing in one spot was a bit chaotic. Soon the mares had to go and join the foals just to make sure there was order. Luckily, they were all pretty easygoing and didn’t really get into fights.

The group played for hours. Sometimes they would play a huge game of tag, others they would pair off and start sparing. At one point they played hide and seek, but the mares quickly put a stop to that, saying it was too dangerous for them to wander off. By the end of the day, all of the foals were exhausted, but happy. Some of them swayed on their feet, determined to keep playing but too tired to do much.

With the sun going down, the mares all rounded up their foals and started ushering them back home, ignoring their complaints and protests. Promising to keep in touch, all three groups started heading back to their herds. Kalina looked down at Bacchus as he yawned, eyes barely staying open. Glancing over at Rana, Ophelia, and Anterus, she saw they were in a similar state. Sharing a look with Silvia and Amora, she silently laughed. It had been a good day. Hopefully they could do something like this again one day.
