I'm glad you found it useful! I am considering making a new complementary tutorial, since this one was made quite a few years back (2007).

alex-inacorner [2009-11-30 06:50:36 +0000 UTC]

wow! amazing tutorial.

but how do you keep the colours inside the lines so well without masking? I mean, whenever i rely on brush control only, i get uneven colours because i take too long and things dry at different rates. Do you have a trick?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bleuphoria In reply to alex-inacorner [2010-01-14 07:29:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah my trick is to use more water on the first strokes when painting with very little colour. If you are precise when you do this, the next layer with more colour will stay within the wet areas.
If you should happen to paint outside the lines be really quick and paint with clear water on top of it and use paper to dab the colour off.
After that you should wait with painting that area until it's completely dry - or the colour will bleed outside of the lines to where you wetted the paper.
Things drying at different rates is very common, it happens to me all the time. Especially with bigger paintings/areas. It is better to wait until the area you just painted is completely dry in that case - or you might get these "flowers" of brighter areas where the colours won't stick.

I hope that was helpful!

Tyche-Pasithea [2009-06-25 10:12:58 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial, really useful. Just a couple of questions though.
1) Is watercolour paper with 300gsm too much or would it have to do more with the surface texture of the paper?
2) Do brushes with sable, hog hair or synthetic materials make a difference when painting in watercolours?

I love how you use deep colours with subtle shades to create high contrast. I imagine the scanner or camera you used didn't do the original justice

bleuphoria In reply to Tyche-Pasithea [2009-07-12 13:29:35 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the wait!

1) That's the same type of paper I use myself, so no I don't think it's too much! I use it either from prestretched blocks or stretch it myself. The texture do make a difference. If you're going to do small or very detailed work I would recommend a paper that is more smooth.
2) I... don't really know that much about brushes (I don't really care that much to be honest, haha). But I found some better advice than mine here: [link] I would recommend buying brushes of different sizes though. It's always good to at least have a bigger brush for backgrounds, and a small one for detailing.

That was a GREAT tutorial! And it's very good to know there are waterproof pens because the last time I tried inking what I used wasn't waterproof and the result was a disaster!
Watercolors are my favorite medium but I just can't seem to master it. This helps a lot
Thank you!!

Trully amazing!

I use to risk with ink pen later, after painting. And the results are often no good... So your way makes much more sense to me, and I'll try it as soon as possible!

Thank you for sharing!

I have not actually tried to ink after painting. I can imagine it's a bit difficult though. I prefer painting on ink lineart, or on faint pencil lines.

Glad you had use of my tutorial!
