Description
I have just recently played through the Sega Genesis Sonic Games for the very first time, and of course did my research into the Sonic Universe. I was intrigued by Ray the Flying Squirrel, who only saw the light of day in SegaSonic the Hedgehog, a Japanese arcade game. Mighty the Armadillo, the other character introduced in that game, eventually found his way into Knuckles Chaotix, and has become a fan favorite?
But why no love for Ray? Well, probably because his original character design was incredibly awkward. But in looking at the design, it was clear to me that he was the prototype design for Tails. After all, flying squirrels are often called flying foxes. So I went back and did a quick mockup sprite of what Ray SHOULD have looked like. I based his sprite off of Tails, the same way that Mighty's sprites are always based off of Sonic. It was done quickly, in about an hour, and incorporated some of the Archie Comics' design, which is really that of a slimmer Tails. If anyone is interested in including him in a fan game, I will happily do the rest of the sprites.

Can you still work on this? I want to include Ray in a fan hack.

Yep. Send me a working build with Tails's sprites in it, and I'll be happy to start making more of Ray.

Why'd you want a build with Tails's sprites, if I may ask?

Because I know a lot of artistic people with very good intentions who never actually get around to doing anything. If you create a fan hack with Tails as your placeholder (because Tails and Ray will take up the same number of sprite tiles), it tells me that you have gone beyond intentions and have actually done the work. You know what it means to work with code. You've thought about gameplay. You've created levels. Creating a full sprite sheet for Ray will take me between 20-30 hours, depending on how many frames of animation you're using. I am happy to do that if this is a serious project. I just like to weed out the "good intentions" from the serious projects.

I understand and agree with what you mean and I think I have to apologize for asking so early on since I've just begun hacking, my rom isn't in a presentable state and I won't be able to continue hacking until around next month. I thank you for your patience and I look forward to sending you a working build with Tails as a placeholder within the next few months.
Before I go on I must ask — I'm hacking Sonic 1. Do you want me to port Tails the same way he works in Sonic 2, with Tails' body and his tails as two separate items? Or perhaps you want me just to port his body without his tails?
Do you want me to port his flying ability from Sonic 3? I've been thinking of having Ray gliding rather than flying since the Ray in Sonic 1 hack pictures it that way, and since I don't think Ray can use his tail as a helicopter to fly (I may be wrong since I don't read the comics so I don't know if they have him flying that way, and I haven't played SegaSonic arcade in quite a while and I don't recall him either flying or gliding).
Thanks for your patience and may God bless you.

Body and tail can be separate. That will make spriting quite a bit easier. Make it how you would want it to play. If you have to use the wrong Tails sprite, that's fine. I know what WIP looks like. But if you make it how you would want it to play, that will inform what sprites are necessary.
Personally, I thought it would be cool if Ray's tail would give him a double jump. He doesn't need to glide like Knuckles; he just needs to be able to jump higher than Sonic. It is your choice though.

I'd like to have Ray using a regular running animation, by the way. And to play just like Sonic. But animated tails would be pretty cool. And having him double-jumping is actually a fantastic idea. I'll see what I can do.

It's a cool redesign, and I think you may be right about him being a sort of proto-tails, but to go ahead and nitpick ...
Flying foxes are a name for large types of fruit bats with long snouts, not flying squirrels.

You know, this has been up for 2 years, and that's the first time anyone has caught that typo. I have no idea what I meant to say.

It's all good. The important thing is the sprite is pretty damn good.
