trying to be funny is like planning to be spontaneous. Literally. Real humour can only happen by accident.

This isn't entirely true.

Comedy is very much a practiced skill, just like singing or acting. I ended up taking a stand up comedy class and the joke writing techniquesΒ  were pretty useful.

I'm maintaining my stance. Comedy film makes my angry or sad (IE the opposite of finding it funny) more often except when the actors are just reacting to the situation naturally.

Look, I'm not saying an organically found joke isn't funny. But its not the only way comedy is derived. There are formulas and techniques you can use to write good comedy, many of which the best stand up comics do, even if you don't realize it.

Comedy is all about subverting expectations, moving to the absurd, and returning back to center in order for a solid resolution of a joke or series of jokes.

Pacing is a huge factor as well. If you get angry or sad at comedy films, you aren't watching the right kind of comedy films for you.

That said, some things can be labeled as a comedy, not because of its humor, but because of the ludicrous situation of the whole plot. The plot is comedic even if it isn't funny. An example of this is Seinfeld: the comedy in the plot is that there isn't one. Regardless, the show itself can be profound or hilarious, but even if it wasn't, it would still be a comedy because it was a show about nothing.Β

Maybe I'm broken but subverting my expectations just makes me uncomfortable. I literally only laugh when the joke is a logical extreme conclusion or reaction to the prior events or an amusing commentary on the events. You know like they used to do in cartoons and action movies.

Here are a couple from my own stand up bit when I did that:

("[after a joke about losing weight] No, no, I lied, I'm gaining weight.) Setup
(I stepped on my scale today and it said "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck") Subversion of expectation / resolution

("Been with my wife for a long time, we finally decided to go on vacation,) Setup
(maybe next time I'll bring her back with me.") Subversion of expectation / resolution.

Even logical extreme conclusions are considered subversions of expectation because you normally wouldn't necessarily expect the resolution of the conflict to be so obtuse.

I'm not saying jokes that go, "A+B=Triangle" are funny, maybe they aren't even jokes as it depends on the context. But jokes that are "A+B=X; X+y=z+B" are a prototypical example of how comedy can be written with proven time-tested results.

(a+b) setup = x (resolution/subversion)
(x+y) setup = z+b (resolution/subversion + a reprise of an old setup or punchline)
