Description
I've been dealing with the illusion of realism. From a distance away I want the scene to come together. Up close the viewer is confronted with brushstrokes on a flat canvas. It is difficult to duplicate the same exact effect with this jpeg, but you get the idea I hope.
20x46" Acrylic on canvas

Great feeling of depth -- I love to drive and this captures the feeling of the U.S. interstate highway very accurately to me, the focus straight ahead and into the distance. I can feel the speed and movement in the work, the awareness of what the traffic ahead is doing, what it might do next.

Thank you! Although this is a very specific place I have painted, I have had many people describe a place not so far from them, which tells me it has that "any place" feel to it that people connect to.

It works. The smaller view is very realistic, (and the thumbnail even more so, appearing to be a photo) but in full view, the looseness of the brushstrokes is very evident. Wonderful work!

I'm amazed that this isn't oils- you work very well with acrylics! The blending is wonderful. I'm not usually a huge fan of realism- but this is incredible. I wouldn't have thought a simple highway could look so beautiful

Thank you! I go back and forth between acrylic and oils, my technique in both is influenced by the other.
I'm glad I could get you to stop and comment on something you're usually not a fan of

I am trying to learn how to paint with oils- so I found this piece interesting.
Oh, and thank you for making me look at things I don't normally do

Yes I do use my photos for references.
Unfortunately many of my subjects are difficult to paint on the spot.

Just excellent... you know you have a good painting when people say "this reminds me of" as is happening in the comments. *This* reminds me of a place on the M1 in the north of England that has a farmer who will not sell his land for any amount in the little island between highways. He has the lovliest little farm structures there.

Thanks!
I just love it when people relate an artwork to their experience---even if it is a drive down the highway.

woo hoo! ive seen the original hanging in your house!
its very nice. i really like the aspect ratio you chose. anything in the wide format i find more interesting for some reason.
it was good to see a bunch of your paintings up close and personal!

went a lil nuts indeed. bryan was like "yeah, we took down everything and replaced it with lisas artwork". and indeed, that was the fact. no exaggeration. hah. its good though. and i did more than glance FYI!

I'm partial to wide format artwork as well.
I'm honored you bothered to glance at those paintings on the wall. My mom went a little nuts with hanging those up. I won't complain

that's so nice, you really make acrylic look like oil with your brush strokes. I like your paint textures

Thank you! It always surprises me that people have trouble telling the difference between my oil paintings and my acrylics

your painting technique always astounds me.
just like in your desciption, its painterly, but so accurate that from the thumbnail, the only way i know its a painting, is i see it was done by you!
i really enjoy and admire your paintings so much!
