Description
acrylic on canvas, 43x53"There are some questions I am getting asked again and again, maybe my artist statement will help:
Traveling in a car is a daily routine for most people in America today. We are often caught between destinations. Much of our exposure to the surrounding landscape is from within an insulated vehicle. For those who are along for the ride, there is a detachment from the scene that is unique to the passenger side. In order to study this relationship, I have taken moments from this journey and turned them into a destination. These common scenes deserve another look. By photographing scenes as a passenger and reinterpreting them with acrylic paint on canvas, I echo the relationship between artist and viewer. The artist becomes the driver and the viewer becomes the passenger. Although my major inspiration comes from the subject itself, there are certain artists and movements that have influenced my interpretation, including Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Hopper, and the Impressionists, particularly Camille Pissarro. These artists emphasize color and light in the commonplace, and I do the same in my work. Through painting the perspective of a passenger in a car, the role of the viewer as an observer is emphasized, and the beauty of the light and color in the commonplace is revealed.

I like it. I only have only one piece of constructive criticism. It looks very well painted, very proportionate. Myself, just starting out, taking every single piece of advice and absorbing helps tremendously, and I LOVE criticism.. so i hope you dont take this personally. Realism is what you are ultimately trying to achieve in your painting, and you have acheieved it definitely!.. but.. lighting is what makes these types of paintings look realistic. the lighting IS NOT BAD, that is not what I am trying to bring across.. I just wish you did not use such extremes, like BLACK.. opaque colours would bring less contrast and more of a flow to some parts of the sky. It's hard to determine where the main light source is coming from.. great painting though!!

Kdago,
Of course, I don't mind criticism! And, I completely agree with your point.
In person, the painting is a little less straight black--it is more dark red and other opaque colors in there. But all in all, it is more dark than I would like. Ah well, this painting is several years old and I feel I've moved beyond it
Good luck with your painting, and keep thinking critically!

Oh my god... your work moves me. I mean... I could go on about the "elements and principles of art" and how they relate to your work in form of compliment... but that's what it all comes down to isn't it? Does it move someone....

This one's one of my favorites... perhaps because this is the one that I helped you paint? Kind of. Don't deny it.

I like it alot. I think the photo would have been just so so but that fact that you've painted it has brought it a new perspective and feeling. Good job.

If I'm using a photograph as a reference I almost always pick one that would be just "so so" as a photograph. No need to recreate something that is perfect---I want to reinvent what is imperfect.
I find it slightly amusing and annoying that the photograph of the painting itself doesn't show off the color subtleties very well. :-\

Absolutly stunning. I love the use of color. This night scene is so beautiful with all the lights and glows. I think you've truly inspired me as to what my next painting shall be.

You always manage to turn this town into something beautiful, few could ever pull that off. I always smile when I see "Home on the Range" down in the SUB down under. Your work is always amazing! I'm going to read your statement right now.

What if you just painted something real with all the wrong colors one time? You should try it. But yer too popular so maybe no one can hear me. Hello?

I really like it, except for the light halos created by the car you took the foto from. The issue being, that those hint at you being in a car, but you have no other clues, and it seems distracting. Anyway, brilliant as always. I know how hard night scenes are! ^_^

That was an issue I debated, but in the end decided it aided the composition to leave them in.
The windsheild is more apparent at night when everything glares off of it. My eye does a similar effect.

^_^ OKay, fair that! Good idea. My eye does the haloing too, just not the arched streaking from the windshield wipers.. lol. Still, fantastic work as always. ^_^

I do work from photographs mostly, but also a lot of memory of the place/color.

This is awesome, but that's nothing new!
I've been meaning to ask, when you do these on-the-road (I'mma call them that) paintings, what kind of references do you use? Do you sketch at a specific place, take photos, mostly improvise, or what? Maybe all of that? I remember reading something you wrote once about painting from photos and how you normally don't like to do it, so I'm always wondering if you use any photos -at all- to paint these. Whatever you're doing, keep it up!
