well, this is the ventilation shaft (plus a groundwater well) of a 13 storey (?not sure something like that) undergroung city built during very early phases of christianity by christians who were running away from romans (interested: search for kaymaklı in wiki or google).

Ah, catacombs. I'm Italian but I really never visited the roman catacombs. I see they're pretty much the same thing.
