Description
this one's a looooong story. So for a class assignment in 3d modeling we were asked to find an outside design, someone else's character and attempt to model it. However there were requirements. It had to be bipedal, had to not come with significant props, and have limited clothing, or preferably naked. The other major requirement was as follows: there must be no triangles, only quads, and no verts with more than 5 tangents, preferably only 3 or 4. Β While other's did the smart thing and made gray aliens, and simple naked guys and galls, I did the smartasz thing and emailed and asked him for references and some details about a character "king" from the webcomic Housepets. I wanted a few things. differing body shapes, a lot of places with changes in digit number, hair of some sort, tufts of fur, and hair and a small clothing detail I could still build out as one part of the same continuous shape. king provided a challenge, he's shorter than the rest of the characters and his proportions change, building a stalky character was more challenging than a lithe generic character" the milton ferrets would have been my second choice, and Cerberus would have been amaaaazing, but let's face it, complicated task, limited time. I literately built this thing glued to a monitor for 24 hours. I couldn't stop, I was in the zone. but vert nuking and triangle busting almost drove me mad. I had graph paper and was trying without sleep to figure out new ways to splice quads out of pentagons, I had significant trouble near the interior of the ear canal where by saving the file as binary I had corrupted a save and suddenly one row of verts had shifted in relation to their parallel cousins, and whilst working in mirror mode somehow. It was a race against the clock and my back up files were so far behind, it simply wouldn't do to restart from attempt 2 or 3. So what I was left doing was fixing an a-symmetrical model and constantly accidentally altering the other side in ways I would have to fix... it also left me with one more issue... an uneven amount of triangles to bust and locate. it ended with a hexagon right above the base of the tail and I had to bust it for quite some time before I located two corresponding triangles near the base of the armpits. finally, finished... a week before it was due... so for lord knows what reason I went ahead and colored it. 5 corrupt saves later, and it finally loads in color. needless to say, I threw the corrupted files and the usb they resided on in the trash before this one, and kept the previous, basic save files in a separate folder. IT souuunds unnecessary... but the files were so badly corrupted I worried about a virus, or something else spreading through it. perhaps the executable language was just so messed up that any attempt at running any of them could lead to damaging the interface of the program in ways that would alter file pathways for other attempts. I don't know a whole ton about programming and computers, but I do know maya can be broken... and binary files can be scary. SO yeah THIS GUY! ooohhhhhhhh....... I'm proud of it. the shapes might need a lot of smoothing and simplification, the paws look like garbage, and the eyes look painted on, but for an all quad 24 hour monster, It still impresses me. the tips of his friggin hair are quads. And I got an A in the class so yeah. shame I never got to print it :/ there were issues with the campus 3d printer and converting the maya files. still wish I had left him in his generic pose so I could attempt to rig him.Βfor those of you unfamiliar with any of the nonsense I just rambled on about, be happy you still have your innocence. enjoy your mudbox speed sculpts and other fun stuff. as for you riggers... good luck, you are some of the bravest people I know.
