Description EDIT: Tweaked it a lot, keep the advice coming...

I've decided that the only way to counteract my piece of crap monitor is to do art in school. This is what I started today. It'll probably look very different when it's done, and I'd like some good feedback...
Working at 1600x1200 screen resolution kicks ass. Majorly.
For the love of God, please fullview? If you're an athiest, please do it anyway?

The stars which this pic points to : [link] anyway, its not that big of a problem... yes the orange does look explosive, a tiny bit of desaturation should help.

hm, ill see what i can do about both of those problems, thanks for the help!

A good choice in form, I might suggest for more interest adding foreground shadow nebula effects to break up the brightness a bit. There are a few places I can point you to for references if you like.

bloknayrb In reply to p-51 [2005-03-25 07:34:37 +0000 UTC]

you mean satellite images of nebulae? or areas on my nebula that you feel need breaking up?

p-51 In reply to bloknayrb [2005-03-25 18:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Yea something like that, it looks rather like a blotch. if you are working on one layer with the nebula and duplicate it and set it to overlay and enlarge it, it creates a colored gassy effect around it. Placing some dark brush strokes around to face makes it appear a bit more deep like [link] just a thought.

bloknayrb In reply to p-51 [2005-03-25 19:28:28 +0000 UTC]

hm... well its actually on something more like 30 layers, so id have to duplicate them and and merge them, which might kill some of the effects... maybe i can just set a new layer to color burn or overlay and color around the edges, do you think that would work?

Pigou [2005-03-24 23:50:52 +0000 UTC]

I love the colours and contrast in the top left of the nebula! very well done...

i'm not sure about the bottom right of the nebula, I really like how you've done the stars, but that intense orange dosent fit into well in my opinion, it should be more along the lines of the orange in between the two pillars. Also the starfield at the end of the north pillar looks abit odd, other than that, the star field looks very realistic!

Very nice details, and that purple/brown/red colour on the left is very well done, it really adds to the photorealism(telescope images) of the nebula that I think by the look of it your aiming for?

Sorry if people have said these thing, I only quickly scanned through the comments.

And 1600x1200 does kick ass, I've missed it so much!

bloknayrb In reply to Pigou [2005-03-25 06:13:09 +0000 UTC]

thank you, but what do you mean by "north pillar?" could you be more specific?
also, do you think the bright orange is too explosion-like, and maybe i should desaturate it a bit?
thanks for such a helpful comment!

well thats just a backdrop for the nebula, which will be transplanted into a seperate piece later on, so the starfield doesnt matter.

very nice work!

only thing i would suggest is blurring it a bit in order to get rid of that repeating pattern of lines in the faint blue behind the main nebula...

but yeah, looking forward to see where you take this

the stars around the nebula look dumb, but it looks even worse without them, i tried removing them. maybe ill be able to come up with something better...
thanks for the input!

I like it a lot except for the top left third of the nebula trailing down. That part looks a pit painted and not natural. Hope I made sense.

Its much better than anything I could do and I still like it but I think that area has a weird look to it.

Crazy-Mr-Fox [2005-03-18 01:33:26 +0000 UTC]

This looked really colorful and and awesome so I had to click on it. Full view looks even better. Critique heavy comments? Umm.. I would think it would look cooler if the colors were more smooth and sharp, I'm not sure if you know what I mean. But that's personal preference. I couldn't make anything that looks half as good so i dunno what I'm talking about. That probably doesn't help, sorry. Just ignore this if it didn't.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bloknayrb In reply to Crazy-Mr-Fox [2005-03-18 01:47:32 +0000 UTC]

smooth... and sharp? lol, im sorry, im not sure what you mean...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crazy-Mr-Fox In reply to bloknayrb [2005-03-18 01:57:40 +0000 UTC]

Well maybe I meant like a cleaner look to it. Like less stars, and there seems to be some kind of noise in some parts of the nebula... But I saw what you wrote about the stars and taking them out so... Forget that... Actually it's probably best if I stop trying to explain what I meant and you ignore my comment and just go on making cool art. I probably would've told Monet that his pictures looked a little fuzzy...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bloknayrb In reply to Crazy-Mr-Fox [2005-03-18 02:13:56 +0000 UTC]

oh, well i know what you mean now by fuzziness. thats a by product of the technique im using to make this, and i actuall like that look, so im not changing it, but thanks for the input

NatchDan [2005-03-18 01:31:25 +0000 UTC]

This is amazing. How was it made? You've captured the gaseous nature of a nebula perfectly, and the whole thing does seem to glow from within as if stars are being made in there. The only problem I can see is that the starfield gets a little cluttered around the edges of the nebula, particularly at the bottom left. Other than that, amazing again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bloknayrb In reply to NatchDan [2005-03-18 01:46:52 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i dont love the stars around there, but strangely, it looks worse when i take them out, so i left them there. thanks so much!
