It was a gorgeous day that Saturday morning. The sun shone high above the world and stained the sky a deep blue. Summer was at its peak and it seemed as though everyone could feel it, as though they all knew that the summer sun was soon due to leave them all.
Ember grazed contentedly in the grass pasture. In the bright sunlight, her deep black coat sparkled dazzlingly. She shifted her enormous hooves and snorted into a patch of grass that didn't quite meet her standards.
Hailey rested a few feet away. She'd already finished all of her morning chores so for now the girl just rested in the bright sun on a lawn towel. She lay on her stomach, her feet in the air as she studied a book before her.
Ember paid her no mind. As long as she was free to munch away at the bright green grass, she didn't mind much at all. She followed a trail of sweet grass along the ground, swishing her luscious tail every so often.
Before either of them knew it, Ember was standing right over Hailey and trying to nudge the towel out of the way to get to the juicy tidbits of grass. Hailey waved her away and Ember snorted, her anger was starting to show.
Hailey pushed her nose away, "You can find some grass elsewhere. We are surrounded in it," she said and turned back to her book.
Ember would not be discouraged that easily. She pawed the ground and swished her tail in frustration. She lowered her head, her ears pinned back against her ears. She wanted that grass and she wanted it now! With a hoof, she head-butted Haileys side and pushed the girl over and into the dew-moistened grass.
Hailey shrieked as the water soaked through her plain white shirt. She sat up and brushed the grass off of herself and peeled the wet fabric from her back, then turned to Ember, steaming.
Ember looked up at Hailey innocently, the towel crumpled to the side, the book lost somewhere in its depths, and Embers nose deep in the grass.
Hailey grabbed up the pink towel and twisted it up. With a flicking motion, she snapped it at Ember playfully, careful not to hit her.
Embers head jerked up to the sky, much taller than Hailey. She skipped to the side, eyes wide and alert.
Hailey jumped after her and chucked the towel at her. Ember saw it coming and wheeled around, taking off. She bolted around the pasture and came back, slowing to a trot. Somehow, through the craziness, the towel had remained on her shoulders.
Hailey giggled and Ember raised her head higher still and came to a complete stop a few feet away. Her stance was perfect and she looked just like a damsel, with a fluffy scarf tossed over her neck. At least, that's what Hailey imagined as she fell over herself giggling.
"You look so pretty!" she said and pulled out a little camera. She sat back and snapped the picture, sure to get the lush green grass and perfect sky in the picture with the horse.
Hailey stood up and walked over to Ember to retrieve the very wrinkly towel from Embers shoulders.
As she shook it out and replaced it on the ground, she mused over what would possibly be a better way to spend her free time. She imagined the show coming up in a few weeks and answered her own question.
