Story
Total Word Count: 1028
The first time that the staff of Churchill Downs saw the small bay colt named Roller Point, was when his owner and jockey at that had been leading him through the fog at five o'clock in the morning that day. Many of the staff later on that day would go on to say as the colt walked past them that morning that he looked right through them as if saying to them 'What are you looking at?.....who do you think you are?. And for a horse with a small stature and of a small size being barely fifteen hands, there was still a presence about him, strength in his walk, his breathing even and calm. Yet, as he passed them?...nobody was paying any attention to any of that, they looked the horse straight in the eye. He was the only son of Tiger Roll the champion national hunt racer and grandson of the almighty Frankel, his breeding was considered very different to the other horses that had stepped through the gates of Churchill Downs and especially of those for the Derby. A National Hunt racer's blood mixed with the famous names of the world of the flat.
It was well know that he (the colt) had been trained since an early age, six months old to be exact, to be able to make a name in both of the racing worlds....to be an 'all-rounder'. Both racing worlds had now witnessed the colt's rise and some people in those two worlds it could sadly be said had formed the opinion that he, Roller Point couldn't cut it in his field's being as small as he was. Being called less than a lead pony, not even being considered a racehorse. That judgement of certain people's had come from the fact that the horse had a good and gentle nature which could be said to somewhat differ from many of the horses in his lineage, all well known and brilliant fierce competitive horses. Whilst it could not be denied that Roller Point was known to be found lazily relaxing in a pasture before a race meeting began...grazing and therefore eating when he felt like it. They called him an obstinant incorrigible pony who had no place. However it was now know properly by everybody that that was not the case, the horse was significantly improving every appearance he made out upon the racetrack and had resultantly just ended a sparkling two year old career only a few months ago by doing the things he desired without his jockey's influence. His dam was Crown Derby Stables very own champion mare Point 2 Point who was also his training partner, this had been done so that he had been trained to feel comfortable, when he was surrounded and could also get used to going through head to head duels and end up winning against a horse that was considered to be equally good as him and as a result his confidence had been boosted and it had been brought onto the track.
Now the famous small bay colt was three years old and was aiming to replicate and improve upon his record as a two year old. He had truly come into his own and every member of staff at Churchill Downs that morning could see it, now being a well known name in the racing world and being a horse worthy of his lineage, with winnings over two million US Dollars. He had made his name for himself, not being the typical large sleek faultless champion thoroughbred that usually came to Churchill Downs seeking reputation and glory, but a champion thoroughbred who was smaller than the others he raced with but who had a big heart and raced his hardest and tried his best.
The staff wouldn't deny it if you asked them , that it was incredibly unusual to see a thoroughbred up as early as the small bay colt was, especially the morning before the Derby, but the fog rolled across the track as it usually did and the sound of a horse's hooves echoed through it like some sort of ethereal being, distant snorting and breathing getting closer and closer with every passing second, yet they stood and they watched with their breaths held from where they stood as the colt seemed to slowly emerge from the fog which seemed to part as if to let him through. They watched as the colt effortlessly manoeuvred his way through the fog and seemingly began to glide his way in front of the stands, the twin spire's casting long shadows, before entering the first turn and disappearing back into the fog again. "Have you ever seen such a horse?" one breathed after a moment as the working staff made their way to the other side of the track following the fog around where the sounds of the horse could be heard from within. "Yes.....the horse just went past us all" another spoke up.
The sun had not yet risen, when the staff had lent up against the track railing upon the farther side, as the horse made his way past them again. "That was his fastest time yet...." one said looking at the stop watch that had been rested upon the top of the railing. "How can a horse last this long at that speed?" another asked just as the horse made his way past them....yet....again. "Especially considering how small he is" another added as they watched as Roller Point entered the fog once again.
The staff did not know in the end how long that they or the horse had been out in the night, but there was now a moment that they had waited for to see and as the fog parted and the small bay colt's black hood once again graced the night air they were about to be a part of it. "Wow..." one breathed as the bay colt met their eyes. "Damn......look at you..." another breathed as time seemed to slow and one by one each of the members of staff took a picture of the colt, an ethereal being from the morning fog truly in flight.
