no, sometimes they do this sort of thing on the stupidest stuff. and sometimes they dont translate words they know the meaning of, but instead leave a note at the top explaining the meaning.
on a scene where ships were firing lasers, there was a "pew! pew pew!" thing at the bottom, as if it required words to describe the sound they were already making.

yes, fansubs tend to fail, and when they do they fail hard.
