Move, please...
Alternative titles would have been: 'Mister Sharky-buns and the Gutsy Diver', 'Give us a kiss then', or 'Swimming with the fishes'. Yes, I'm weird that way. ^^
Ever had that feeling, when you have an idea for a picture in your head, and for some reason you just HAVE to draw it, or it'll eat your soul? To me, this was one of those pictures. It was sitting there, in a dark corner of my mind, going: 'Draw me, mortal!' in a scary booming voice.
So here it is. Had to be done. Who is in whose way? I don't know. Why is the shark an anthro, instead of a regular shark? Beats me...
As for the technique, I took the opportunity to practice some painterly techniques here. At first I wanted to draw it completely lineless, but since I'm still not used to painting that way, I ended up using some vague line art anyway. The whole thing is still very rough, because, frankly I lack the stamina to finish projects like these. I probably could have carried on for a while, but I wasn't sure if it would lead anywhere. Am I even on the right track here? Am I using correct techniques? I really want to learn how to paint digitally. (Enabling advanced critiques for that reason.)
Also, I know the underwater atmospheric effects don't look too hot. I seem to have forgotten how to draw them right. I need to study up, it seems. Anyway, enjoy the strange workings of my mind!

Well, it looks like that guy is screwed.
Hmm... what could I say? I'm impressed by the shark's anatomy: he's pretty large- about the size of a megalodon- but you worked out his proportions pretty well. He neither looks too tall and thin nor too short and stubby.
About the ocean lighting, you've worked on it pretty well. I was about to say that it looks a bit too dark as you get to the bottom until I zoomed in a bit and found out it's fine. Furthermore, I know you've probably heard this quite a few times, but I can't stop thinking of how the light refracts at his foot!

Thanks for your comment! I'm really glad you like it.
It's been a while since I made this, and looking at it now I have to say I like it a lot better now. Gets better with age, I guess. I remember the light effects were fun to do, but I was really picky about them. So I kept redoing them.

Yeah, I can tell the lighting seems like quite a bit to work with, especially with the tilted light-angles since light works pretty weird underwater, but you really managed to make it look realistic.

Dude, take it from a scuba diver: you got the water just fine.

Eh, maybe. He's Great White based, and they supposedly don't like the taste of humans much. Not enough fat or something. XD

I can not even BEGIN to tell you how much I love this! I love how the "light" fades towards the bottom, I love the shark, this is just so awesome!

OH SHI-
Lol, not sure he would even have time to say that. Very cool, I really like how you did the water.

Lol. I doubt he would be able to say anything at all, since he has that respirator in his mouth and all that.
Thanks!

Oh my god, you know the guy in the boat's thinking, "Meh, a shark"... I bet the water is getting very warm around the diver. Hilarious idea! Horray for you for acting on a whim, those "burning" ideas can have great results, as you showed here.

Lol.
WORST. DIVING. BUDDY. EVAR!!
Thanks! Yeah, I usually resist 'burning' ideas, because I just don't always have time for them, but this time I just really couldn't help myself.

This instantly reminded me of shark week. :3
Wonderfully anatomy if I do say so. I never thought I'd see an anthro shark, but here it is. :3 The onl;y thing that bugs me is the light coming off the claws but thats it. :3

Lol. I think I saw bits and pieces of Shark Week. XD
Thanks! The anatomy was never a big problem for me, it's how to 'aint' instead of draw, which is still difficult for me. As for the light bouncing of the claws, yeah people pointed that out already. ^^
I totally didn't pay attention when I was drawing that bit. XD

That looks so awesome. I love this. What did you paint it in? It compliments it very nicely, and the colors are extrvagent.

I painted it in Photoshop, which isn't the most ideal program to paint with, but it's all I've got. XD
Thanks! ^^

Thanks. Photoshop is more suitable for photo editing. It's not painterly enough to paint with, and also apparently not good enough to draw good clean lines with.
That's what the critics keep saying anyway. Photoshop is pretty much the only tool I've got, and as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with it.
Thanks! ^^

I think it looks really good, your digital painting looks great especially considering you're just getting into the swing of it.
Being a fan of long, vertical canvasses, this caught my attention right away.
I think the character design is fantastic, though I think his feet and hands should have the same number of digits since I think it's a tad unbalanced. I like his butt.
I wish I had some tips for underwater scenery and atmosphere, but I don't. >: Maybe if you drew the ocean floor in the background? I dunno.
But overall, awesome work. x]
That's as critique-y as I get, can't use the actual critique thing without a sub.

Oooh, thanks!
Yeah, I've tried several times before, but I haven't had the courage to discard line art altogether so far. Hmm...
I like long vertical canvasses too. They allow for such cool effects sometimes. Heck, you saw my Avian contest entry. Lol.
I also used it here: [link] [link] [link] (weee, old stuff)
The hands and feet turned out weird, I'll admit. I gave the feet more toes on purpose though, just to be 'different'. Ah well. I seem to try to be different a lot. Heh.
And yeah, I like his butt too. Had lots of fun painting that.
I didn't draw in the ocean floor, because it's supposed to be really deep water. So no floor in sight.
Hey, thanks for commenting. I actually only had one critique on any of my work. Like, ever, so I really don't mind.
Off-topic: I think it's really weird that you need a sub to write critiques. I can understand needing one to request a critique, but non-subscribers can't write or even comment on one.
It's like dA is saying that non-subscribers don't have anything worth saying... *rolls eyes*

Maybe not the entire ocean floor, but maybe some peaks rising in the distance? Like...draw the tips and have them fade into nothing? I dunno, that's sort of what I did here: [link]
*pokes his butt*
The critique thing is weird for sure. I mean, you can write a fine critique in your comments, you just don't get stars. Nowait you can do that too! There are star emoticon things, aren't there? *checks*
Yes. yes there are.
At least we got the fancy message system, apparently that used to be subscriber only.
Though I might get a sub when I'm able to update more.

Yes, I know what you mean. But I really wanted to go for a more murky, deeper, more scary sort of ocean. An ocean filled with giant sharks isn't very scary if you can look so far out, I think.
I really like you picture too. Nice perspective, and nice how the penguins really look as if they are flying. I have a penguin-nutty friend who might like to see this, hmm... ^^
*Shark turns around and chomps your hand off for poking him*

Yes, there are stars in the comment system. Heck, I think you can even do half-stars. The only difference is that a comment-critique will get buried beneath comments saying 'That's cool' or 'Kawaii!!', while a real critique, once approved, will sit on top of the comments, and will be on your profile page, along with all the other critiques you've ever written.
Seriously? The message system used to be subscribers-only? Wow, that really sucks! Can you imagine, manually checking your art for new comments?!
I got my sub from a friend. She'll get me a year sub when she gets more money, and in return I'll give her a nice commission. But if I hadn't found anyone willing to to a sub-commy with me, I think I would have happily carried on without a sub. Only the ads were annoying me. They have found a way to put ads in your message centre, which can get round my ad blocker on FireFox. It's annoying, because it messes up the lay-out quite a bit. XD

Yup, stars and half-stars are both there~
Even with the short comments some people are bombarded with, I try to make an effort to make a decent post.
There was always a message centre...it just wasn't quite as good. P: No thumbnails for deviations and it was always a pain to delete things.

Blue-Uncia In reply to blazegryph [2009-08-11 07:42:07 +0000 UTC]
The effort in your posts shows.
Yeah, I remember when comments weren't displayed in the message centre like they are now.
You'd get a message saying '*Insert name* has left a comment on *insert name deviation*', just like the faves are displayed right now.
And you'd need to click the message to actually read it. I'm sure this optimization of the message centre is a great improvement for the more popular artists. XD
And the thumbs in the watch centre are a brilliant idea.

Yeah, I noticed that. I was thinking reflective light when I drew that, but I went too far, and now the foot lights up like a star. Lol. XD
But yeah... I need to practice this stuff more often.
