ok you may be mixed up with photoshop with the naming of the tools in gimp. The tool you called free cut tool is called lasso tool and the blending tool is actually called the smudging tool. No worries i still understand the tutorial and think its very nice.

how can you make it transparent when you cut around the horse? like step 1. mine just goes white.

Ahh ok. When that happens once you have selected around the horse just go cut and paste as new layer the horse should appear without a background. then you can just delete the old layer. Hope that makes sense?
