At first glance, Quartz just seems like the lumbering, aggressive muscle of Jason's crew, but underneath that literal rock-hard exterior, he's really a big loving teddy bear! He is a warmhearted, caring, supportive, and gentle giant, who cares about his friends and sticks by those he's close to. Being possibly the last of his kind, he's also lonely and a little desperate for companionship. He is often shown to be oblivious, devoid of common sense or otherwise not very intelligent, which leaves him easily manipulated. Though he can at times be deceived, thanks to his childlike naivety, Quartz is just tired of being taken advantage of for his strength and wants to use it to do good for others, especially since his kind doesn't have the cleanest reputation.

Backstory:
As a child, Quartz was a survivor after his planet, Lapis Lazuria, blew up for unknown reasons. He felt like an outcast among other intergalactic denizens, who often saw his species, the Dolomites, as hulking, destructive brutes. Yet despite their immense size, rock-hard skin, and Superman-level strength, Dolomites are normally peaceful creatures. Quartz eventually wound up in the care of Vildro, a greedy tycoon who wanted to use Quartz's great strength for profit. Quartz went on to become one of the most renowned pro-wrestlers in the galaxy, and an interstellar superstar. But behind the scenes, Quartz was terribly abused and mistreated by his manager. Vildro only saw Quartz as a tool for making money, and would often manipulate him by making him believe he was indebted to Vildro for taking him under his wing.
Then one day, Quartz meet someone who would forever change his life: JASON MILES! Jason signed up to compete in this intergalactic wrestling match, which Quartz was the reigning champion of, in order to use the prize money to buy himself a new spaceship, after his handmade hoverbike got damaged when he and P.A.T. crash landed. Using spare parts he finds at a local junkyard, Jason is able to create a strength enhancing belt that allows him to defeat every opponent in the wrestling match and climb up the ranks until he got to Quartz. During their match, Quartz accidentally breaks the belt, causing Jason to lose. But after learning that he was being cheated by his corrupted manager, Jason and P.A.T. decided to take pity on Quartz and invite him to join their little group. Quartz rebelled against his manager, and ran off with his two new best friends. Quartz was finally given the opportunity to use his strength to help others, instead of just hurting people for sport. He was also able to show off his hidden culinary skills, becoming the cook to provide all of the team's meals. It took time for the trio to get used to each other's company, but eventually they all came to love each other as a family, and now they can't imagine being apart from each other.
