You know funny enough I actually thought of the theory thatΒ Bertram and Smudger were the same character even before watching T1E2H3'sΒ The Search For Smudger movie.
Hell I love the idea thatΒ Bertram and Smudger are the same engine so much that I would consider it not only a headcanon but official canon in general (Unless they admit in the future that they are not).

A bit of Bertram and a bit of Smudger, no offence. I mean, they look a little attached to each other like half man and half monster.
That's just my opinion, but I do like Duke, Skarloey, Rheneas, Duncan, Sir Handel and Peter Sam. But where's Rusty?

I see what you mean. Well I wanted to show how both characters are the same person. IDK how else to show two different people.
As for rusty, yes I know I haven't included him because I ran out of space. He also didn't have a large speaking role in the film.

Yep. The guy falling is Bertram when (according to the original story) his tank engine self falls. Afterwards, he's rebuilt as the tender engine you see. But in my humanized vision, Bertram trips and falls into a deep river. He miraclously survived but lost his memory and was really hurt so he had surgery.

A SURGERY?! Gulp, we were doing about a surgery and if this was in early 1900's, he might've been lucky to survive. Back in those times, a lot of people weren't so lucky when they had a surgery. Too much sleeping gas had made them die.

That's symbolism to how Betrtram fell off it that one time and lost his memory. It's also symbolism to how Bertram wanted to commit suicide by falling off the bridge when the other engines discovered the truth.
