Depends on the level of autism.
If he's referring to autistic children like my brother who is socially inept, then yes.
But not all are like that.

I know plenty of autistic people have problems forming coherent sentences (especially IRL). But I also know that symptoms of autism vary wildly, and not showing one specific symptom doesn't mean you don't have it.

Exactly.
I know someone who has two autistic siblings. One is in 6th grade so it's easier to tell how he is. The other is too young so it's hard. But, the older kid, he can speak. He can form sentences. He's socially inept though, but not like my brother. My brother can barely form a sentence (& he's very smart) but this kid can't socialize at all. He can speak full sentences, but he's just not smart enough to be able to handle socializing. He has a lot of trouble with it also.

It's one of the confusing things about autism, I guess. It all depends on where you are on the spectrum.

Then the ones I've seen must be pretty stupid.

Or they just have different symptoms. The symptoms can vary a lot. Plus, forming coherent sentences online is way different than doing it IRL. One of my classmates, who is autistic, can't talk to people IRL, but he does just fine online.
