It seemed like an eternity that Celia clung to her brave Temple Horse before the storm let up a little and the black mare's instincts proved to be right, showing something rising out of the ocean in the distance. Still Inca paddled on, progressing slightly faster as the wind and rain blew themselves out, though by her heaving sides it was clear that she would have been faster had she not already tired herself out fighting the weather for what must have been many hours.
Celia felt guilty being little but dead weight to her poor mare, but there wasn't much she could do about that, not without her sealskin, short of letting go and allowing herself to drown. Somehow, that didn't seem like a feasible option, and she had a feeling Inca wouldn't have liked it, either. She'd seen no sign of Persephone the whole time, and could only hope the seal brown mare had managed to save herself from the disaster.
As soon as the mare found solid ground under her hooves Celia let go of her, walking on tip-toes and then flat on her feet as the water grew shallower. Inca gave a great sigh as she came far enough up to free her barrel from the water's chilling grip, and the Temple Horse's head drooped close to the water's surface.
"You've been so brave, dearest," Celia reassured her mare, lifting the black head and supporting it on her shoulder. "Now let me help you."
They barely passed what seemed to be the high tide mark before the mare collapsed in the sand, exhausted. Celia sat down next to her, heedless of her ruined gown, and lifted Inca's head onto her lap. In silence, the selkie watched over the horse that had saved her life while the mare slept the sleep of one that had used up all of her reserves. If any danger approached them, it would be up to Celia to keep them both safe.
