It's pretty simple, I learned it from my friend.
All you have to do is duplicate the line art layer, change the (the one on top)layer setting to difference, and then lower the opacity.
Then you transform it just a teensy tiny bit in whatever direction. And done!
It might not work with light line art colors, so you might want to experiment with darker colors.

I think I know what you're talking about. I sorta did something similar with one of my last icons to give it a 3D looking effect.
That's a really clever trick. you pulled it off well.
