Names left to right:
Blairmorite Pie, Emerald Pie, Sunstone Pie, Aquamarine Pie, Chrysoberyl Pie, Alexandrite Pie and Agate Pie
Design and name origin:
Blairmorite was designed similarly to his brother, Igneous Rock, and his namesake. I gave him purple eyes like his niece, Marble. He's taller than the average stallion.
The rest of his family was named after various gemstones and designed accordingly. Emerald is shorter than the average mare.
They have many boys versus only one girl because they are meant to be similar to the other Pie family, but also different. So they had mostly sons.
Personalities:
Like how the (show's) Pie family used to be, they are gloomy and don't tolerate bad workmanship. The Pies work hard on their rock farm and mostly specialize in Gemstones compared to their paternal relatives, who mostly specialize in plain old rocks. Any tomfoolery is handled with punishment, so the children have become order-serving robots, in a sense.
Although the parents don't realize it, their family is about to snap in half any minute. The family deals with their predicament in multiple different ways.
Sunstone, the youngest son, although quiet with everyone else, playful with his younger sister who is just as quiet. He is talented in magic and sneaks of sometimes to practise spells, which are not usually allowed because they waste precious time for work and sleep. If he only stuck to his time slots, he'd never get anywhere with his dreams of becoming a powerful unicorn and moving to Canterlot. He doesn't have much hope in this dream though, and morbidly, believes he'll do this for his whole life without escape.
Aquamarine, or just Aqua, rarely speaks and never smiles. She is a late bloomer for her cutie mark and is somewhat ashamed of it. However, Sunstone tells her he only got his when he found a sunstone gem, his namesake, when he was only a little older than her. She, learning this, looks for her namesake gemstone, aquamarine. Whenever she finds a blue gemstone, she becomes bummed knowing that is isn't an aquamarine because she didn't get her cutie mark. She will give an upset huff and will say in a nearly monotone voice, "Just more junk," throwing it into the cart.
She only values finding herself an aquamarine, and won't even smile at the sight of the rarest gems in the land, like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, anything. She doesn't care unless it's that elusive gemstone that never seems to come into her grasp.
Her best friend is Moonray , who moved to Ponyville for school. She secretly wants to go off to the School Of Friendship with Moonray.
Chrysoberyl is a no-funny-business stallion. He keeps his siblings in line when their parents aren't around, being the eldest of them and the leader of sorts. He gets the work done and expects his siblings too as well. He uses hard work to forget about how boring their lives really are. He cares a lot about his siblings but doesn't show it outwardly. He wishes to be a businessman, but with no colleges or universities in town, that'd mean he'd be forced to leave, and not wanting to do that, he stays reluctantly.
Alexander, or Alex, annoys his siblings in order to forget their boring life. He loves annoying his brother Agate the most, knowing this gets on his nerves the worst of his siblings. Sometimes he's half asleep during the day, and no pony knows why. 'Why' you ask? Because in the middle of the night he wakes up and sneaks out to this beautiful cave he found while a young colt. The gems covering the cave seem to be magical in the fact that when life is around, the more active it is, the more it glows. He's not sure why these type of crystals do this, but he wants to keep it a secret. He knows his family, thinking of them as extremely selfish, would want to steal the crystals and sell them, and he'll no longer have his own place to go or even a gem to hold on to. He secretly loves dancing and uses the cave as a dance floor of sorts, moving around the cave, the crystals becoming brighter or dimmer depending on where he is, like a disco ball and beam lights. The cave is truly his favourite place to be, his safe and happy place.
Agate is a grump. Years of being bossed around, and naturally being a bit of a trouble maker to his family—high energy, curious, making experiments, often with his family's crystals—he has grown to hate being on the rock farm. He steals bits of gemstones, time at a time, waiting until he has enough to run away from the rock farm and support himself in his new town. He gets a sum of money every month, but it'd never be enough, so he steals gemstones, small amounts that wouldn't be noticed, and hopefully, it'd one day be enough to get out of town. Where does he plan to go? Anywhere that isn't here. He hates being bugged, so he has a terrible relationship with his brother, Alexander, who always teases and pesters him.
Blairmorite and Emerald think they are raising their kids great, clouded by their pride and ignorance to their children's unhappiness. Blairmorite prides himself on raising an empire of the gemstone industry. Their income is actually really great, but they don't invest any of their money in "materialistic" things.
Emerald has three trees as her cutie mark, and misses partaking in nature, but follows the family traditions she married into because she believes that they must be right if they've been around for generations. She is just as blinded by the vale she covers her eyes with, but she is much more loving with her children compared to her husband.
History:
Emerald and Blairmorite were both born in 957.
They first met as a foal in 963, met again in 970, and started dating in 974.
Emerald and Blairmorite got married in 978.
They had their first child, Chrysoberyl, in 979.
Agate was born in 983.
Alexander was born in 986.
Sunstone was born in 989.
Aquamarine was born in 991.
How the family would be introduced into the show:
Two cutie marks would be summoned to the map: Pinkie Pie and a character introduced in another episode, Moonray . Both Pinkie and Moonray see where they are being sent. Moonray is nervous to go, while Pinkie is ecstatic. Twilight inquires about both their reactions. Pinkie responds saying that her extended family, aunt, uncle and cousins, live there, while Moonray says that's exactly why she's nervous to go. They get there by train and the viewers find the place to be a nice town, with ponies saying joyous hellos to the newcomers, sparking curiosity of why Moonray would be nervous to return. That is until they reach the Pie Farm. The place is grey and drab compared to the lovely little village that Pinkie and Moon were passing through.
Pinkie eagerly knocks on the front doors of the Pie Farm's house, and compared to her huge smile answers her frowning uncle.
"Pinkie Pie," he says, still frowning. "I didn't expect you here. Or you, Moonray."
"But we are here!" Pinkie responds exuberantly.
The two are invited in, seeing the rest of his family having breakfast, unlike Pinkie's family, not eating rock based foods, but instead boring, greyish toast and oatmeal. Aqua's reaction changes from dull to somewhat shocked when she sees her old friend who left for school in her home, but she says nothing leaving the viewers questioning their relationship.
The episode goes on, showing little arguments that could grow into full out fights. One being Agate finding an aquamarine and his sister getting very upset over it, Agate being annoyed by his brother Alex. Chrysoberyl telling his siblings to stop knocking off and get to work, leaving Sunstone and Agate to mock him, upset. Alexander is shown also sneaking off at night, Pinkie and Moonray asking him what this place is, and then he explains. Sunstone is shown practising magic away from his siblings with Pinkie sneaking up on him. The scene after, Aqua asks why Moon left her for Ponyville, and that she needed her. Moon apologies but it's clear that the problem wasn't resolved.
Eventually, one argument breaks the camel's back and all the siblings yell at their siblings and parents. Aqua declares that she's going to leave to Twilight's school with Moonray, Agate and Sunstone say they are going to put their sums of money together and get on a train to Canterlot, Chrysoberyl says he's leaving for the nearest college, and Alex proclaims that he's leaving for his career in dancing. All of the children also tell of their parents, saying how awful they've always been and that they made their lives unbearable to live. Everyone storms off, leaving Pinkie and Moonray in the camera's focus and then it fades to black for a dramatic cliffhanger ad break.
Moonray and Pinkie rush to the sibling's rooms, finding them packing and being rude to each other still. Pinkie and Moonray try to reason with them, but untimely fail as all of them walk for the train station, Pinkie still trying to reason while Moonray gave up and is just following Pinkie Pie now. Pinkie still tries to reason while they are all waiting for their train. When the train arrives and the siblings are almost on it, Pinkie Pie blows up and gets upset with them before calming when she gets their attention.
"I know how you might feel like leaving without a proper goodbye will fix your problems, but it won't. It'll only hurt you and your family," she tells them. "When my older sister left to live with Granny, my parents were happy, well, not exactly, but it's hard to explain. They thought their problems would be solved, and she probably thought so too."
This is where the audience finds out that Pinkie actually has 4 sisters, compared to 3. Pinkie continues, "We all became sad without her, actually; even Mom and Dad. I don't know about her but... I'd guess she felt sad too. We felt empty. We never said anything, but I could tell we all regret letting her just leave like that. We all stopped talking about her but... we all remember her and it hurts that we haven't seen or heard from her for years! I don't want your family to end up like that too. So please reconsider leaving! At least say a proper goodbye first if you insist."
The siblings look at each other with melancholy faces. Moved by their cousin's words, they return to the farm and talk to their parents, who were sad at their children's leave then shocked to see them enter the door. Chrysoberyl talks for his siblings while they sometimes nod at his words. He tells their parents that they aren't sorry for what they said, but for how they didn't say anything sooner and how upset they were when they said it.
Blairmorite says, "Apology accepted."
The shot is still for a second or two before Pinkie nudges her uncle encouraging him to say something too. He tells them that they are also sorry. They're sorry that they didn't notice their behaviour. Emerald adds in that tradition may not always be the best way to go about things, and that if they don't want to stay on the rock farm with them they are more then free to leave for their dreams.
The siblings look at each other for a few seconds. Sunstone says that they all want to stay and adds in, "Oh, and Apology accepted," mimicking his father's tone. The scene ends with everypony laughing. Moonray and Pinkie are at the train station, with their cutie marks flashing, being greeted off by the family. Aqua gives Moon one last hug bye before Pinkie and Moon get on the train. The train leaves the station. The family talks happily as the train leaves. Pinkie moves her head away from the window—suggesting she seen what we did— and smiles.
Moon asks, "Miss Pie? Are they going to be okay?"
Pinkie says back, "I think so."
And the episode ends.
