The pony on top , Veliss Vernak, is into weak black magic and witchcraft, and after learning a 'takeover' type spell, used it on the nearest object, a thin black sock.

Thus like a parasite it attached to her back and grew enormous, also growing insides, large button eyes and a long felted tongue. So they are alive, to an extent. With this strange and new-found power she forged her own 'species', resurrecting those of the dead with their own unique sock.

As for the common/uncommon;

It is common for the pony to have
*One sock
*A sock-like neck-wear

It is uncommon for the pony to have
*A damaged sockling (Since then it means they both struggle to live)

It is rare for the pony to have
*More than one sock, meaning more magic needed
*Beast-sock, the infusion of an animal with the sock

It is very rare for the pony to be
*Any other specie except for earth (Pegasi or Unicorn)
