I see; I'm planning to do my own fanfics (my username/pony art is what it will be), but I'll try NOT to do any of those things (and I agree, the CMC giving up their cutie marks sounds like shit). I'm glad I never read that comic (did you do a review/rant on it? I'd love to read it if you did). Darkness wise, I'd try not to make my stories too too dark (I'll include something like that sad swamp scene from Neverending Story but it will have a happier ending in a way). I might include blood but that's it.
I've read some Sailor Moon fan comics that I have confidence were way better than it.

(It's different. THERE it feels like the Mary Sue is there just so the author can preach their heart out without being called out on their attitude in story.

(The point of Dark World Arc was spawning the most depressing and bleak setting I could think of. Then revealing that there was still hope in it, and then that world becoming as light as it was once dark.)

I disagree with Alex that the Ponyhammer comic is grimdark. It's dark to be sure--the Mane 6 have been corrupted into chaos demons after all--but it's not the darkest thing ever. It's not even that gory The main characters of the story are Trixie and the CMC and they do have some success, even if it's just them escaping the Corrupted 6 and getting to safety. Plus comics set in the future show that the CMC will eventually form a faction that is able to oppose the villains on equal footing. So there is hope. Alex is just hung up on the fact that the Mane 6 are now villains.

Imagine, if you will, that G1 Ponyland was the old country of the ponies, up over the sub-continent pass the Crystal Empire, where the Frozen North now stands.
Now imagine G1 was in reality Equestria's version of the Hyborian Age; the forgotten dawn of pony civilization, the era of heroes, sword and sorcery.Β
Now imagine that Paradise Estate and Dream Valley was one of those lost pony kingdoms (or at least a settlement) that had risen up, then fell to ruin, during that age.
Now imagine that that most of everything that happened to the G1 ponies - Tirek, Grogar, Lavan, Squirk, etc. - really did happened (With Megan and siblings or not, depending on preferences), but unlike what was shown on TV in our world, everything that happened was much darker, edgier and grittier in context, more akin to adventures in Conan the Barbarian/Lord of the Rings style fantasy epics.
(And for bonus points, in-universe they were recorded in some chronicle or manuscript, was found by Equestrian ponies ten millennia later, who decides to adapt it for Equestrian media, but heavily edited, censored and desensitized, and the resulting product was something like the original pony TV show in real life, minus the Megan siblings)

Technically, according to Amy Keating Rogers, Firefly was a reference to Lauren Faust (Fyre-Flye) and not this Firefly :/ But you know the fandom is going to totally ignore that part.

I know what it's supposed to be, but I agree more with what Rogers is saying. One way to kinda connect it is to say Firefly was named after the general; when I write fanfics, that's what she's gonna be, and she'll probably even become the new Wonderbolts general (in my headcanon G4 and G1 kinda take place at the same time in a way)

Lauren Faust's online name (fyre-flye) was named after the G1 pony (firefly was Lauren Faust's favourite G1 character) so it's technically an indirect reference to G1 firefly.
