Description Starcraft 2: Kerrigan Evolution
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!

This is a work in progress screenshot of Kerrigan's various evolution stages as she progresses through HotS. As she reverted to her Zerg empowered state, her ghost suit was going to deteriorate and eventually reveal her queen of blades characteristics. The visual evolution was downplayed since it slowly took the edge of her climactic return to power, and all the evolution models were shelved.

Unfortunately, these models in particular will not be utilized.Β

That's a shame. It was really fun to dig around and see what was added with LotV - especially that old Creep Colony model, circa 2007.

Lorewise, we ended up with Primal Kerrigan not being corrupted/influenced by Amon, but old infested Kerrigan was (hence why she was more evil then, compared to now).
But do you know what the intended lore was, if Blizzard hade gone for the gradual reversion?

Would a gradual reversion had resulted in her becoming corrupted/influenced/evil once again (since this is not the "pure" transformation, as Zurvan called it)? Or would Kerrigan become less evil, with Blizzard dropping this "Amon-influenced-her" thing altogether and tweaked it differently?
And would she and Raynor part ways with a far more bitter taste than what HOTS ended up with?

Even with the gradual reversion the story would have unfolded the same way. We wanted to show her hitting bottom and having to rethink what she was doing. Her decisions would have been the same, the visual progression was simply showing that she was embracing the infestation again, but on her terms. She was going to use that power but be in more control!

I suppose the leaked ending cinematic was made while this was in progress?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to Igbear [2015-07-03 19:46:59 +0000 UTC]

It was, but the leak was pretty isolated from what we were doing on the in-game production and didn't impact the storyline. It was an unfortunate leak for sure, but when it happened we were already full steam ahead.Β

I pictured Kerrigan like this in the original starcraft. Pieces of her hostile environment suit still attached after being infested and explaining how she used to cloak.

Is it just me or is Kerrigan more... well endowed here than she was in the finished game.Β  Maybe I just didn't zoom in on her enough, but the breasts here definitely look larger than in the cinematics, at least.

Anyways, I did like the change from orange to purple and am eager to see where the Zerg story goes from here as it seems to be the one that's, well, evolving the fastest out of the three factions.

Boarguts In reply to op3999 [2014-11-02 08:59:12 +0000 UTC]

She is much more endowed, but it's a game-art trick to make her iconic from a RTS game camera.Β

There are some fun things coming up for Legacy of the Void! Patience!Β

DZkribblerLuiz [2014-04-10 00:34:02 +0000 UTC]

What made you decide to change Kerrigan's yellow-orange psionic power color to purple during her reinfestation?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to DZkribblerLuiz [2014-04-16 04:51:36 +0000 UTC]

It was decided after this model was made to show Kerrigan's empowered primal state as purple, since the orange glow was oldschool Overmind influenced.Β

Nice! How do you get the model to look good from a top down perspective? It always seems like when I do that it always makes my models look like they have tiny feet and hands.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to Hyboreal [2013-07-18 07:41:08 +0000 UTC]

We scale up hands and feet all the time! Alot of time is spent on the model just getting it to look right before we even start texturing.

This could have also caused copycat issues, because something similar happens to Samus Aran in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
And yes, the transformation-all-at-once choice was a better one, for sure.

I remember the gradual re-zergification being teased in that Blizzcon painting by JP, really cool to see these models even though the idea got shelved =\

The JP tease at Blizzcon was rightfully questioned and it's a bummer the transition models were shelved.

Aww man. This looks so cool. I'ts a shame it didn't get into the game.
Why does the quality of the leftmost one look worse than the one on its right, btw? I mean, the arm texture and lack of toes and such. Simply unfinished?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to alesha678 [2013-03-19 17:07:06 +0000 UTC]

The leftmost one is the old WoL version with only a few tweaks, so it definitely looks busted next to the new models!

Boarguts In reply to Shaade [2013-03-19 17:06:17 +0000 UTC]

The bummer was knowing that we'd get a chance to redesign her infested look, and not doing it because there wasn't time to make a new model for the cutscenes, etc.

Tokoldi [2013-03-16 19:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Is there a reason the ghost suit's glow changes colour? Part of the visual evolution as well? In other images you posted her suit glows purple. So I am curious if there was specific reasons for it apart from the visual evolution.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to Tokoldi [2013-03-16 19:37:15 +0000 UTC]

There was a decent amount of indecision about the color of her glows, and transitioning her from the orange Queen of Blades to the purple Primal Zerg colors. Many cooks in one kitchen!
