Description Starcraft 2: Zergling Strains
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway

These are the two evolved versions of the Zerglings in Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm. Unit variations can be tricky because changing the art can easily confuse the original design into looking like a whole new unit. Thankfully these simple changes didn't distract from the original design too much.

Do you know who did? And where I can find them?

The Raptor variation should be a tier three upgrade at the spawning pool, with the requirement of Hive, and both zerglingΒ upgrades. Once researched, the Zergling can morph into a Raptor, bringing them up to 1 supply from 0.5, and costing 50 gas more before the morph can occur.

It be fun if the Zerg got a unit that can traverse terrain too, and that be a good way to do it without having to ad an entirely new unit.

Swarmlings would be a tad bit overpowered if they were used in vanilla multiplayer.

Raptors have the benefit of having overall improvement to mobility with the ability to jump up and down cliffs, which allows them to easily reach their targets and ambushing unsuspecting forces. Then they also have the added benefit of +2 damage to their attack and it definitely helps to deal higher damage (improves their effectiveness vs enemies that have a high armor rating).

Meanwhile, Swarmlings are excellent for the sheer numbers that can be made on short notice. It definitely is worth having them if your main base is attacked and you don't have any units that are within range to assist, so you just queue a quick batch of these guys and surprise the enemy. Then there's the idea of continuously spawning them and spamming them in the direction of the opponents base with sheer attrition.

It's a choice between quality and quantity when choosing between the two. Personally I'd choose the Raptor since it gives me plenty of options to fight off an enemy, especially on maps that have differing levels of terrain to take advantage of. They have better odds of insuring you actually hit your target, and they do so pretty quickly. Swarmlings aren't too bad themselves, they're pretty decent in fact, though it's more of a preference for me and Swarmlings don't inherently have any bonuses (they're still equal to standard zerglings stat wise) and benefit more from the fact they can overwhelm unprepared forces with sheer numbers.Β

Again it is more a matter of preference dependant on one's own play style and both are excellent units. There's also the fact the raptors look kickass.Β

Wow, crazy! You helped make all/most of the unit models in Starcraft II? That seems to strange to see someone like you floating around on a place like DeviantArt. I absolutely loved reading through your many notes, telling the story of developing all the models you did.

The Raptor strain is probably one of my favorite units in Starcraft. I love the way it looks and moves. I loved it enough to make a reference to it in my corrupt Pokemon themed Minecraft modification: Minecraft Corrupt Nincada Mobs Sample . Of course it has nothing on your work because of Minecraft's blocky theme. I tried my best with detail yet still make it animated with my self taught skills.

Work like yours and your comrades baffle me. I have never worked with true 3D modeling. Thanks for recording your development stories for everyone to read. ^^

Thank you for so many kind words! I've been on DeviantArt for a little while, I've always liked the format for posting art and comments.Β

The Minecraft mod work is wonderful! I'm also a huge fan of the game, it's quite a thrill to see Starcraft translated into Minecraft form!

Thanks! I ended up playing through the Heart of the Swarm campaign since these comments. I did not really play Starcraft/Brood War (because I was not any good at it) but I hear a lot about the Lurker unit. I am contemplating adding it to my modification. Might be a little too difficult to program, so I might do the Lurker's alternative in the campaign. Personally, the Impaler was my favorite Zerg unit in the campaign.

I do not recall seeing the Impaler unit floating around in your gallery.

I picked the Swarming Strain... I could basically leave my base with no guards and just make a batch of them to pick off any ground attackers while my spores took out the air.

Pair them with a bunch of Swarm Hosts that have the Pressurized Glands Evolution, and the Creeper Strain and I also have a mobile air and land attack squad for a heavier attack.

I loved using the raptor strain (and the Baneling equivalent of it) I found it tacticaly better than the swarming strain, yes, greater numbers is good, but the cliff jump gave me a lower loss of units in most moments.

The in-game raptor strain reminds me of a ant-related insect that swarm near a lamp. I don't know what's the english name.

Zergling strain ready for augmentation:
Left: Raptor Strain. Able to jump up and down cliffs, leaps toward enemy units.
Right: Swarming Strain. Able to spawn almost instantly. Three from single egg.

I went with the raptors(because zerglings are already easy enough to mass, what they need is more powa!), but I personally prefer the design of the swarmling. It looks very similar to the primal zergling(I think Abathur makes mention of this, something about the primal dorsal fin resurfacing?), which I like.

I went with the Swarmling. Throw as many as you can as fast as you can at the other guy. Why can't the multiplayer have a feature to choose between upgrades? I would have LOVED to have Spectres as Terran multiplayer!
