if my memory is correct, Kermit didn't start out as a frog but rather as some random lizard creature. i remember seeing an early Kermit puppet on some Ed Sullivan re-run where he had even more crazy neck fringe and i think a tail.

I could see why the frog would be thinking WTF, but Kermit looks more like his species than a lot of other fictional animals (Mickey, anyone?)
