She was shy and felt so small, so she accepted herself a life in between the books. During the day she watched as the world passed her by. She felt unnoticed - at first it stung, then it became like a warm blanket. At night she folded herself between the pages - an observer to another world that existed only for her entertainment.

She expected those days to go forever - forever the watcher and never the watched. For that matter, so did he. That was until their eyes met. He touched the dainty foot that sunned itself from between tomes. It immediately recoiled in horror.

Both were uneasy, watchers becoming watched. But slowly, and with mutual care, over weeks the two warmed to one another and became the highlight of each other’s day. Until during her nightly routine she could no longer observe her world of print. Her mind could only think of him.

Mind resolved when he arrived with his goofy, charming smile, she leapt from her place among the books. She appeared in his trembling palm where she sat and patted it reassuringly. “It is time, please escort me into the world I left behind.”
