Bella breathed slowly trying to control the fire in her belly. Despite her best efforts it came out like laser beams as her now titanic lab partner, Friday, pressed a similar scale lump of chalky candy to the corner of her mouth.

“Come on Bella, just lick the candy, it was an accident. I’m sorry and will try to make this up to you…” the clumsy college student tried to avert the steely gaze.

Bella swatted at the hand, without effect, “Friday get that away from me. It’s June so I know that Valentine’s candy has been in the bottom of your purse. Just another piece of the mountain of evidence of how sloppy you are. I can’t believe I…” Friday silenced Bella with the press of a mirrored tip finger against her lips.

Friday smiled how easy it was to silence one of her sharpest critics. Placing down the candy, she wrapped the newly free hand around her midsection and lifted her doll sized lab partner. Accentuated with a squeeze that reminded Bella how delicate she now was, Friday asked. “Are you finished?” Bella, realizing her powerlessness had begun to tear up in frustration. She nodded and Friday removed her finger.

Friday wiped away Bella’s tears. “I know I am clumsy and you are so much better at this than I am. Frankly I am intimidated by you. That is why I wanted to be your lab partner - not to drag you down, but for you to help pull me up.

“I’m so sorry about this accident but I don’t want to hurt you more. We need the professor’s help but she won’t be back until next week. So please let me take care of you until then. I can guarantee I am better at that then this lab.”

Bella’s face softened. Wiggling her arms free she raised them signaling the want of a hug. Friday smiled and obliged. “I’m scared, Friday.”

Friday stroked her friend’s back, “I know. Come on, let’s get out of here and do something fun. What do you say?”

“I would like that…but please don’t put me in the same pocket of your purse as those Valentines candies. There is only so much torture I can bear…”
