The History of the Alternative Compass man

CompassMan and HeroMan were originally built at the behest of Dr. Fang, the former was made to spread destruction in Hammercity, while the latter would be responsible for cleaning up the chaos CompassMan Caused. The purpose of Dr. Fangs plan was to gain government power and later produce an army of HeroMan robots for the purposes of the Hammercity police. However, after one of the fights between Hero and Compass, Hero lost. The fallen robot got so enraged that he left the control of Dr. Fang and began destroying anything in his sight.

Compass felt that his opponent was not completely defeated and began to go after Hero, eventually ending up in the city Monsteropolis, where they were both defeated by Megaman. Their encounter with Megaman ended up destroying Hero but Compass survived. Megaman felt pity for the damaged Compass and took him to Dr. Light's to be rebuilt.

And for the plasma saber that CompassMan acquired, it was obtained after one of Quints that came from the future to murder Megaman (who became known as Rock Shadow due to his resemblance to Megaman) Mega and Compass defeated the Quint and managed to get his weapon: the Shadow Sword.
