Description I have to admit, I've been on a post-apocalyptic kick lately. Especially since I finally had a chance to play Fallout 3 and stuff. Man is that game awesome!

Anyway, was stumbling around the interwebs, and found this super awesome tutorial at PSDTuts [link] These guys are my friends.... I've found lots of things to do with their help, and this one was no exception. It got me into the kick of doing things again.

I know - it's not perfect or anything. I wasn't trying for anything perfect, just trying out new things lol. I also didn't do everything the tut did, especially since I didn't want to spend hours looking for grass that could fill the roads right. Still, I like the messy sidewalks. Kinda seems like the grass is "starting" to take over.

Or it's just an oil spill that got everywhere. *shrug*

Anyway, links:

As always, please comment if you download. I sure would appreciate knowing who out there is looking at me. Enjoy!

Hi I'm an editor of a new university research magazine called Frontier. I wrote a piece on post-apocalyptic film and we would love to have your image as part of the article. You would be fully credited and a link to this page or your own website would be printed. Plus I'll send a free copy.
If you contact me on emsy_21@live.co.uk I can send a copyright agreement out to you asap.

I have, and for some reason I'm not sure I like it as much. Dunno, just feels off somehow. Loved the world though.

Yah, I agree. There's things I like about both. I hope they manage to bring it all together in the next one.

I do lots of apocalyptic work using just adobe photo-shop 6.0. What I learned from experience, is to rely more on your drawing skill rather than too much aps or plug-ins. I really like your piece here, you really get the feel of the post-apocalyptic environment.

I recommend watching the "Life After People" and "Population Zero" documentaries. There is a lot of work there to take notes from. But great work!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Glad you like it. The sad thing is I used my laptop's trackpad, but now I have at least a basic tablet. The next one (if I ever have time to work on it) should be even better.

Only thing I don't like about this art is your statement that Fallout 3 is awsome . What can I say? I'm Fallout1&2 fanboy, so I'm bias.
The rest is very well done. Must have been a time consuming process...

Fallout 1&2 were awesome-er, certainly, but I love the stuff Bethesda makes. New Vegas wasn't near as good, so... Thanks for the comment though! It took forever 'cause all I had was a trackpad at the time. Tablet now, so next one should be a little easier/more detailed.

Murr, may I add this picture to my roleplay group Monsters vs Humans? This picture matches the environment of the roleplay. Everything's so desolate, dark, fragmented, and quite depressing. It's awesome~

Absolutely! Let me know how it goes.

I like it...though I do not think the "grass" is A realistic touch but it added a nice touch. Look forward to seeing more like this.

yeah it turned out looking more like an oil spill or something. Shoulda spread it out a bit more. Oh well. Thanks!

I love the attention to detail, like number plates hanging off and things like that.

Yeah I did what I could to include a bit of everything. My favorite part was the front of the bus, where the piece is falling off. Thanks for noticing!

Nice job! I wanted something a little different, so that we weren't all using the same source material for the tutorial. For a first attempt, I think it turned out nicely.

Thanks for the comment!

Hadn't noticed... Thanks! I will keep working on that. I have another photo I took myself that I'm slowly working on that should end up a lot better. One of these days I will get this one out and touch it up a bit.

Thanks for the pointer!

at high res I can tell that this was done in PS/gimp, but I really like the way it turned out still. I think if some kind of filter was applied over it I wouldn't see the edges as much and I could throw it on as a background.

Also, a note for future post-apocalyptic thing like this - the sky seems a tiiny bit too blue still. I think if it had a little more yellow it would more appropriately fit with the colors of the rest of the image.

Nice job though! I wish I was courageous enough to take on photomanip to this magnitude lol

bobsideways In reply to brubee2k [2009-10-18 14:55:22 +0000 UTC]

Good points, thanks! I was kinda going for a more stormy type of sky, but I do definitely see what you mean. That's why we call it a test, eh?

I'll tweek it some more if I get a chance - try and get it a little more "real" than shopped. Thanks so much for the helpful comment!

What texture did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bobsideways In reply to ChaosModifier [2009-07-09 17:20:53 +0000 UTC]

All texture courtesy of stockxchange, found via the tut. It had 3 - 1 for the street, 1 for the sidewalks, and 1 for the buildings. A 4th would have made it look like grass was growing, but the angle didn't fit the picture at all.
