both free Apophysis is great for creating shapes - mediocre ones are dead easy to make, more pretty ones take a lot more patience
Gimp is... best used as a layering tool
hope that clears things up a LITTLE bit
Try out Apophysis though..

With a program called Apophysis, Gimp, and a lot of patience tweaking it all together glad you like it
do check out my other stuff.. it's all pretty similar
