Daniel Robitaille was the son of a former slave who had become immensely wealthy by mass-producing shoes during the American Civil War. His father had him sent to many great schools across America, which lead to him becoming a well-known painter.

After he fell in love with a woman he was commissioned to paint a portrait of and got her pregnant, the woman's father furiously had Daniel murdered by a lynch mob.

However, Daniel still existed beyond the grave as a wrathful spirit now known as the Candyman, who will kill anyone that mentions his name 5 times in front of a mirror, in order to keep him and his legend alive.
