Risk and other war strategy games are also good at causing rifts between family and friends.

What do you think kills the most friendships? Monopoly, Uno or Mario Party?

Monopoly by a country mile. Β
Uno is fine in short bursts and Mario Party actually seems to cause some kind of shared-trauma bond of brotherhood between those who have survived it's trials.
Monopoly on the other hand is much like Global Thermonuclear War. Β The only way to avoid the utter destruction of everything you love is not to play.

Ok, but nothing compared to the blue shell in Mario Kart. Heck, my brother refused to use it when I was in the 1st place. I would've probably done the same.

The spaces before the GO square are actually the dark blue ones.
Sorry to be so nitpicky.
Also, I have a MLP-themed Monopoly board.

The problem with house rules is, everyone who lives in the house has their own take on the house rules...

The first rule of house rules is: you don't talk about house rules

That's why you should either:
-hide the rulebook and rely on your speech talent to convince others that there IS such a rule;Β
-read it carefully before, looking for loopholes to abuse at the worst possible moment;Β
-write the rules your way, print them and swap the original rulebook for the edited one.Β

I never consider this. Genius! XD

Yeah, problem is, you got to make it look legit, and as close as possible to the real thing.
Sometimes it's as easy as getting a close enough font and scale, and sometimes you need to make a specific layout (for these foldable booklets), copy the illustrations, and even laminate the thing...
Also the edits must be real thought-through. A contradiction or a bias towards something might raise suspicion that might ruin everything.
But if you do manage these edits, you can have a lot of fun.
And if you're extreme, there's more.
(Warning, following actions require having a developed pokerface skill not to give yourself away.)
You can change small details every session to invoke some serious shitstorms.
A player starts referencing the rulebook, but what they're referring to may now be incorrect. Arguments ensue.
Bonus points if both arguing sides' info is incorrect (as of "current" rulebook).
More if everyone's info is incorrect.
It's a more long-term investment that requires some effort, but if it's done propertly, you'll be playing on a whole new level.

I didn't expect quite a detailed response. You sound like you've done this before XD.
Luckily, though, my rules as the DM are: trust me, and it'll make things a lot easier for you.
So if I need to fudge the rules in a particular situation I can, and people don't worry to much about it.
Lucky for them on the other hand that I'm not the kind to mess with them once I've gained their trust -
but then that kind of approach is always short-lived ^^.

IrdesTheBrony In reply to JNinelives [2016-12-27 12:32:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but Monopoly doesn't really have a DM, and this is what makes this metagame of bullshit possible.)
The fine skill here is directing the argument away from "player vs player" to "players vs rules".Β
So instead of game driving players away from each other, it drives players closer as they fight the game itself.
And in the end, everyone agrees this is bad. Which was the needed result: my friend who assisted me in forging rules didn't like the game but his family loved it. I wasn't suspected since I didn't own the game, he wasn't since he actually did nothing (except give me the rules).
After doing the crazy stunt of hotswapping rules mid-game, several times, everyone agreed this game is weird.

And that's when Night Light and Twilight Velvet duck out to spend time with their grandfoal.
Twilight Velvet: "Great job, married, has a kid...and our son still acts like he's six."
Night Light: "Not like our daughter is any better there..."
