Description
Decided to go for a somewhat different approach on the 'Crystal Express' train seen in the Season Four episode 'Three's a Crowd'. With the slope the original has, how could I base it on anything but the Bugatti inspired streamlined casings of the LNER A4 pacific's.I've no idea why I decided to change the Pacific wheel arrangement (4-6-2) to an Atlantic wheel arrangement (4-4-2), but it actually looks rather nice. Who knows, maybe I might have a go at kit-bashing this in 00 gauge sometime over the summer. It'd certainly make an interesting piece

"Oh, Spencer, I remember hitting that pony you described. O the indignity."

Beautiful engine!Β Makes you wonder why Sir Nigel Gresley never tried streamlining any of the Atlantics the LNER inherited from the GNR, GCR, or NER.

I suppose it might have something to do with the size of the boilers on the Atlantics compared to the Pacifics. That, combined with streamlined casing, would probably make it far too top heavy.

Nah, I'm more partial to smaller engines myself, such as the LBSCR Terriers or the LNER Y6/J70 class. They've got far more character than big engines

Good point... Plus, You're from Britain... You don't need engines that can carry a 5 mile freight train 2000 miles without stopping... Only in America do we measure our trains in miles.

I thought the Crystal Express was a cab-forward design?Β Then again, there doesn't seem to be many British designs that are cab forwards, aside from the ill-fated Leader.

Indeed it is, the LNER A4 pacific design
I also see you're from Canada. Not sure how much of a railway person you are but one of these engines actually resides in Canada, rather appropriately being 'Dominion of Canada'. Definitely worth a visit, photographs don't do it justice as to just how beautiful this engine is

I'm just looking at the picture and I can't fully express how gorgeous it is.Β
Ah, why trains had to evolve out of their glorious, coal-powered ancestors... It was a great advance in technology, but lost its beauty. I miss steam locomotives.Β

my only complaint because of the lose of the 3rd drive wheel and 4th tender wheel the locomotive looks squashed. I'm a collector of OO locomotives and I've got four A4 class locomotives in my fleet.

Artistic license chap. I wanted to try and make the engine look more 'cartoony'. Omitting certain sets of wheels on an engine is a simple way to do this

id just use it on dads set up (well half setup, hes got a massive room dedicated to it - and its mostly electric and live steam (all the large decent ones - theres a couple little 0-4-0 wind ups lying around tho) i might have to explain the ponies a bit more tho...i think he knows, but doesnt really 'get" it :c

I hate the Crystal Empire. Something about it seems...wrong. Maybe the Crystal Ponies are golems made by Sombra and his enslavement of them was no different then making a robot you built work? Maybe it's just Cadance?
Is that a coal fired engine? More importantly, what's the difference between Pacific and Atlantic wheel arrangements? I'm guessing the middle numbers are the specific wheels the engine turns. Speaking of which, why are the bars that hold them together on the inside? Wouldn't putting them closer to the edge mean you need less energy to push them? Learning about trains is fun! Taggart Transcontinental, here I come!

bobthedalek In reply to Articunos-Bitch [2015-01-26 19:36:56 +0000 UTC]
The main difference between the Pacific and Atlantic designs are the amount of drive wheels (and to a point, the amount of wheels on the tender).
The Atlantic's have four drive wheels, so they noted as being a 4-4-2 design. With four leading 'bogie' wheels, four drive wheels & two trailing 'pony' wheels. The Pacific's on the other hand have six drive wheels, so they're noted as 4-6-2.
Although it doesn't really influence their design name, Pacific's usually have larger eight wheeled tenders to accommodate the large amount of coal and water they need compared to the Atlantics.
