And I remember it was bloody cold with lots of wet salt spray and I seem to recall I got frostbite or a paper cut or something; but it's missing the shot that is truly suffering...

pretty!

it would be cool if it was possible to really have a full moon during the daytime and it would be as bright as this!

BobVPR In reply to Jet22 [2010-02-24 00:29:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! January's full moon appeared 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than any other full moon of 2010 since it was closer to Earth than usual ('perigee' the nearest the moon gets to our planet during its orbit, reaching a distance of 221,577 miles from Earth).

By the following morning at moonset it looked much the same, see "Perigree Wolf Moon" [link] by photom17, or see [link] by digitalmidge on Redbubble.

Oh goodness, this is so incredibly bizarre and amazing! What a surreal and beautiful shot, and with the moon so clear. It's almost like it should be some moonscape rendering, but knowing that it's a real place makes it even more amazing.

Truly, fantastic shot, and congrats on the very well earned DD!

You're very welcome
The moon is a great subject, in almost any medium, if you ask me. I've always had troubles shooting it, though, so yet another reason why this shot was so striking.

Congrats again <3

Thank you, I feel the moon came out nicely too, but the shame is that the granite and ocean became second fiddle.

Stunning.

One question: Was the moon actually there, or was another image from the same time/location combined into it?

HA i just faved without commenting except i...just commented.

anyways love the moon in it. the moon always looks so small when i try to take pictures of it.

I also LOVE rocky coastlines like that.

Thanks! Lots of rocky cliffs and boulders, but no sand. They say there is an optical illusion to the way the moon appears near the horizon because of the proximity to familiar objects like trees and houses. If that is true how come the same focal length lunar shots stacked in photoshop have different widths? I say the celestial object gets closer sometimes, really is begger sometimes and causes greater tides sometimes. A telephoto lens can pull farther objects closer, flattening the depth and making a distant landscape appear similar in size to the distant moon.

teh ameture only understands ameturespeak.

but yeah...i love rocky coastlines. there's one in canada, bruce peninsula. only was up there once but it was so much fun.

anyways, to interpret what i think you said...you thought i said your pic was altered to make the moon bigger or somethin to that effect. didnt mean that...just said i could never get it like that...either i never saw it big or w/e else i dunno i'm just the ameture here. still love the picture.

Most landscape photographers know their schedules and plan out the location for lunar photography way in advance, somewhat like astro-photography, but light pollution is not as big an issue... and I like to get there the day before the full moon so I get an illuminated landscape. Everyone knows that every full moonrise coincides with the setting sun (as well as a full moonset coincides with the rising sun). I bracket the shots like crazy because the light is high contrast, and by crazy I mean jumps of two or three stops. I will run some with stacked ND filters and graduated neutral density filters... so the shutter may stay open over 30 seconds... and some shots will be 1/1000 sec, with open aperture to minimize tripod vibration and some shots will be 18mm and some will be 300mm.

The problem with the contrast is mitigated by using a graduated ND to trim brilliance off the moon and then use HDR or PS to lighten combined layers so the moon pops out of the stack of layers and the landscape foreground has detail. Have fun!

Love the picture! very well exposed, and the framing is excellent. is the moon already there when you took this ? it makes the photo very surreal. to my eyes it's like being in a different planet looking at earth. well done mate!! wish i could say the same about winter though..

BobVPR In reply to JGDA9RS [2010-02-09 17:38:52 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I am glad you liked it, and it sounds as though you are intrigued as well. The moon and landscape are real, I think if the moon was stock from some arbitrary month the surface features would show it was incorrect (like sometimes the man in the moon looks as if it is Jimmy Durante's mug and sometimes it's Jackie Gleason's). What makes it too bizarre is the lighting, I went too over the top with the PS rendered illumination and loads of texture from hard light on embossed granite. But I was having fun and I meant it to be enjoyed...no controversy on that!

JGDA9RS In reply to BobVPR [2010-02-09 18:07:54 +0000 UTC]

well when i saw the moon, the first thing that came to my mind was double exposure with the bulb mode, and using that photo of the moon to utilize for another landscape scene. specially since the moon has this yellowish tint to it. awesome work though. it's really amazing.

When I use the category of digital darkroom it gets really confusing. I go out with a plan of action, bring back the image and carefully edit, bracket or crop. It is still a landscape.

All these years and I'm stll not sure whether the proportions are natural on Dolly Parton, bless her. I stopped listening to the purists after I read Adam's writing about touching up the tombstones on his :Moonrise Over Hernandez". Shoot for the moon and let the rest take care of itself.

Wouldn't be bothered by this if it was in the Photo Manipulation category but seeing as its not, this is dissapointing. To call this a photo and a "natural representation" of the landscape in your eyes is unethical. I think you should change the category of this one...
