Years ago, I ran a homebrewed ALIENS RPG. I decided that if the xenomorph were bioweapons, that they should have been engineered *from* something. This is what I imagined the xenomorph queen was based on, a sort of dinosaur-like creature. The crest is essentially a psionic antenna the creature uses to communicate and enhance its senses. The official bio states that they see with a combination of pheremones and bio-electricity sensors laced throughout their body, and concentrated in the dome of their head. Β Similar to sharks.

Yeah, but I don't think that would be adequate given their wide range of habitats. I personally like to think they maybe also have a form of standard photoreceptors on the front of their skull, below the transparant outer skin.
