About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

So didn't mean to do that. I was testing out your new llama icon (so much better) and hit the wrong button.

hello!
i'm using this for about 2 hours now, while i love the rest of the features, there are things i find quite annoying... (that you can't turn off or change)
my screen resolution is 1680x1050, and the wide comments on a deviation page just looks frustratingly too wide for me, a line would have like 50 words... which is quite hard to read. while i understand why this is implemented, it's not a good idea to be unable to turn it off, me thinks.
also a small nitpick, i miss the backward and forward icons.
thanks for this script tho, it's been otherwise really cool
just PLEASE let me use the original width of comments!

For people with screens as wide as 1500px and over, I wouldn't expect them to use the full width of the screen for their browser. Personally, I still like wide comments even if they're that wide, but I know there are others that want the option as well, so look out for it in the next update.

i do like to have my browser in full screen... very much.
as a side note, i find your avatar strangely very tempting to click on, even when i knew it's just an image, nor does it fit my screen theme anyway XD

widening the comments seems to increase loading time, and lags the page when scrolling, perhaps you could find a way to quicken this...not sure if its the comments in particular but you could look into it, also to be noted is it lagged alot for a first time load, not sure if these things were effected from the mod or just me. I also removed NoScript because its a piece of crap...not sure if a first time load after doing this also effected it in some way but just so your aware of that...love the mod man keep up the good work.

NoScript has its uses, but I find that it rarely helps. Using Adblock Plus and turning off third-party cookies help a great deal more.
And regarding deviantTIDY, there shouldn't be any lag. The majority of it is in CSS, which is loaded before the page is even rendered. That includes wide comments. If you're still using Firefox 2, you may find that certain CSS slows things down more than usual.

JikaruTakhira In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-10-20 22:35:20 +0000 UTC]
Yea I got rid of NoScript, it was more of a pain to UNblock everything that was being blocked than to keep it. I always have Adblock Plus on, works wonders.
Regarding devTIDY, I guess it was a one-time deal with the lag, seems fine now. Btw I love it And I can't seem to find the setting that moves the reply to the top of the messages...

You know what would be a nice option? Being able to have either the expanded comments or the normal comments. And in either one, you should have the bars to the side of the comment, showing where it replies to.
Would be a nice option instead of having to edit yourself

Well, lets see. The option to set how small the text goes. The option to hide Avs. The option to hid the 'Devious Comments (Add yours)' on comment pages.
Hmmm
You know at the bottom of the page it shows (if set) the Daily Deviations? An option to make the browse button not go to the DD page, but instead shows different DDs at the bottom of the page. OR it loads the entire list of DDs at the bottom of the page.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Two--Tone [2008-10-21 16:40:57 +0000 UTC]
You can already turn off avatars and signatures from your Settings page.
And regarding DDs, I think it's far better just to browse the proper DD pages, as there isn't enough space in the footer to see them all.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Two--Tone In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-10-21 21:21:13 +0000 UTC]
Thats why you expand the footer. I don't like having to go to a different page just to view 26 to 35 images when I should be able to just click the button and see new ones.
And I don't have that option in my settings page... matter o' fact I don't have a settings page link anymore
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Two--Tone [2008-10-22 20:25:33 +0000 UTC]
Personally, I don't use the footer at all, and keep it collapsed. I still believe just opening DDs in a new tab is the easiest way to review them, and the comments accompanying them.
For your Settings & Profile page, click the arrow next to your username at the very top.

BoffinBrain In reply to Two--Tone [2008-10-24 01:59:23 +0000 UTC]
So it's not in the footer where you expect it, and you're using 3.0.1? Try removing and installing it again, or else you might have to hunt down another script that conflicts with it.

Two--Tone In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-10-24 22:05:23 +0000 UTC]
Another idea for an option. Its nice being able to see what kind of messages you have because they types are displayed next the 'Messages' link, but wouldn't it be even cooler if you could see what kind of messages you have just by looking at the title of the webpage? (example: [link] )
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Two--Tone [2008-10-24 22:27:38 +0000 UTC]
Well firstly, it wouldn't be possible to have the message count in a different style to the rest of the tab name. Secondly, it would appear on every tab - rather redundant, and some of them wouldn't stay up-to-date either. Thirdly, If you have lots of tabs, the tabs would be too small for you to see the message count anyway. Finally, The deviantMESSAGE extension puts the message count in the status bar of Firefox, so it's a much better solution to the problem if that's what you're looking for!

Why don't you have this on the Mozilla Add-Ons web page? And if you do, why don't i see it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Two--Tone [2008-10-12 00:07:59 +0000 UTC]
I've said quite a few times to people, but since it's hard to fish through thousands of comments I'll just say that I chose not to post to Mozilla because the addon only benefits deviantART users so it's not really multi-purpose, and also all postings and updates have to be manually reviewed by Mozilla developers so it's inconvenient for everyone.

Two--Tone In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-10-12 00:29:14 +0000 UTC]
Okay. Oh, is there any way I could have it so that smaller comments are an option? I personally don't like it, but I use a lot of other features the plug in has. So I don't want to uninstall it, but I don't want to have trouble reading the comments.

BoffinBrain In reply to Two--Tone [2008-10-12 06:29:25 +0000 UTC]
OK, well make yourself a new style for deviantart.com and insert this code:
#deviantART-v6 div.thought div.body {font-size:100% !important;}
That'll return the comments to normal.
