About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.

Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.

And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.

Features

  • More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
  • Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
  • Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
  • Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
  • Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
  • Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
  • Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
  • ...and many more!

Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.

FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.

Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

As I looked at my Firefox screen after updating to the newest version, I wondered what could possibly be different/better/etc. I sat there and melted my poor brain over this for about 20 minutes, and combed the page for anything new. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="18" height="15" alt="" title="Confused" />

Then, giving up, I happened to switch to a different dA tab and saw the settings box. WOW! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/o/o… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="OMG" /> I spent a good half hour figuring out and testing each and every aspect of this amazing new script, and now I present the most important ones (in my opinion) here:

Shortening Page Titles
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Green" /> An excellent idea, as I always have trouble reading what each tab says when I've got many open.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Red" /> Nothing wrong!

Add Scrollbars to Long Comments
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Green" /> Already a great idea, but what made it even better in this version was being able to choose between 15-line and +30-line comments. More customization is a plus!
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Red" /> As only seen from a cynical and pessimistic approach, I could only suggest adding more lengths to choose from. Otherwise, nothing wrong!

Strip dA Redirecting
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Green" /> Excellent idea, as that thing was getting increasingly annoying.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Red" /> I have yet to wonder if this will interfere with `electricnet 's Embedded Redirect script, or if it'll override it completely.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Red" /> It might be a problem if someone links you to a virus that you might've been able to catch in the URL, but didn't take the time to notice. Doesn't happen much, so only time will tell if that's a huge problem.

Log In, Redirect
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Green" /> Great concept, as I used to grow tired of having to click on my message center after logging in. My automatic Firefox bookmarks and password memory kind of took care of that, but you never know.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Red" /> Again, nothing's wrong, although I wouldn't mind seeing more options to redirect to (Forums, Chat, etc.) in a future update.

Skip the Prints Stage After Submitting
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Green" /> An excellent idea, since I rarely submit prints and find that intermission annoying as well.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Red" /> I know it's gonna nag me the one day where I submit a print, but oh well.

Overall, I most enjoy the fact that you can choose to enable or disable certain features (such as skipping the Prints Submission Stage) depending on your needs. This entire process will definitely ease future days here on dA, and I have an extra comfort: if my Firefox bugs out and makes me redo it all, I know that it'll only take me five minutes to configure it all again!

Two thumbs up for the dA coder extraordinaire!

It doesn't interfere with the Better gAteway script.

I leave the redirects enabled on dT, and let Better gAteway handle them.

(However, if you open the outgoing links in new tabs, like I often do, the dedicated page is shown there.)

Thanks for the very detailed critique. It's good to know you've given everything a thorough test.

On the subject of the number of options available for certain features, like scrolling comments and redirecting, this is the first version that's been so customisable and it's up to people like you to tell me what extra features would be desirable, so hopefully I get more comments like yours. Of course, I also have to balance out packing out as many options as possible with keeping it simple and suitable for the majority of users, so it's just a matter of time to see how it will evolve (and perhaps what other people will write for it).

For stripping dA external links, basically, all the scripts are going to go about this in the same way and executing the same routine multiple times, while inefficient, will not break anything. And of course we all know what lurks behind some links - I would hope that those with the intellect to use and install scripts and extensions are aware of the dangers of the Internet, and won't try to hold me responsible! (I'll probably make a note to add a warning message to that effect.)

Great design! I think it has a unique feel and at the same time still gives it the deviantART feel as well. Haven't really downloaded to test it out but designed based critique I think is great.

You have managed to do a lot with your design as far as the viewers vision goes. The extra features make this one amazing bundle. The colors you used are the same as DeviantART main colors but how you applied it into your own design makes it an overall effort. I really love looking at your design. I have so much to say but just so little time. I'll let the design say it all, as they once said "a picture means 1000 words" =]

I give it a 7 out of 10. Great Job! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Thanks for the first critique on my work! Just to be clear, the colours look the same as the rest of dA because it doesn't modify the colour scheme of the pages - it just alters the layout. Hope you give it a try some time!

Hey, the userscripts seems to corrupt the notes widget - for any message that is longer than the text box (makes a scroll bar), when previewing the message, the "Edit" and "Send" button disappear and can note be recovered without a refresh to the page.

Could you try running it on Palemoon with Greasemonkey and see if it works there? If so, Scriptish could have an issue. Reviews on the Scriptish page indicate that it may not be getting any further updates, so Greasemonkey might be the preferred solution.

I've had problems too (specifically the missing options button, which has been driving me crazy) and I've been trying to find a way around it.

Userscripts.org is down for good it seems. A few script websites are starting up, although there isn't much out there yet. A mirror site for userscripts.org works at times, I found the deviantTIDY script there: userscripts-mirror.org/scripts…

As for the missing options button, I found installing both the greasmonkey script (from the mirror site above) AND the stylish script worked for me. Worth a try?

BTW, I know nothing about programming so I've probably done the computer equivalent of dividing by zero and my computer is about to be sucked in to a black hole, but hey, it works for now!

Yes, I was having problems with several Greasemonkey scripts around that time too. It seemed that loading and saving of preferences simply wasn't working half the time, so I put it down to a fault in the extension itself. Thankfully, it seems to have cleared up now.

Is there anything specific about the way you used Firefox or the machine you're running it on? It might be worth wiping your Firefox profile (describing how to do this would take a while but you can search for it) and disabling all plugins to see if that helps.

As for Chrome support, that's something I am willing to try. You could give TamperMonkey a try and see if that helps. Let me know if you have any luck with either of those issues.
