About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

What about other text on the web? A lot of sites use text this size. Does using CTRL+scrollwheel to zoom the page help?

I set FF's default to size 14. It works for the pages I visit regularly.
CTRL+scrollwheel does work though.

Having to modify my copy of the script (been running the Greasemonkey version since it's easier than worrying about compatibility) so it stops telling me to update. Unfortunately I can't use reflection to figure out where the version is actually set in code.

hmm.. what's odd is that when i click on the Download the extension for Firefox [link] it only installs the 4.2.0 again, which i already have.
can you tell me how to upgrade to the recent 4.2.1 please?

BoffinBrain In reply to OtisBee [2011-09-08 16:32:07 +0000 UTC]
I've re-installed the add-on from that link and double-checked the install manifesto, and it is indeed 4.2.1, so all I can really suggest is to try again. If you have 4.2.0 installed already, forcing Firefox to search for updates should work.

oha.. my bad.
i thought that i actually had the firefox add-on installed, but it turns out that i had both the greasemonkey and stylish scripts installed instead. so when i checked upon the version number after installing the add-on, i mistakenly looked in the greasemonkey scripts, which of course i haven't updated, hence it showed the older 4.2.0
anyways... i deleted both scripts and when i refreshed the deviantART page i was on, it eventually congratulated me that i have deviantTIDY 4.2.1 installed.
so everything seems to be working fine now.
btw.. would you recommend using the add-on or is it better to use the stylish/greasemonkey combo?
either way.. thanks for the quick response and help.

Glad to help.
Well, the FF add-on exists for a good reason - for users who use Firefox and don't wish to mess around with the internals of deviantTIDY, it's the best option because it is dead simple, doesn't have any external requirements, and updates by itself (like you would expect from any add-on). For tech-minded people who already use Greasemonkey and Stylish, like you and me, it's completely your choice. There is no inherent benefit - i.e. performance - for one over the other, and they're both updated at the same time.

I found exactly the same problem when I just updated to FF 6.0.2. However in my test profile, this doesn't happen, even though dT is installed on that profile as well.
I found that the culprit is actually Tab Mix Plus (currently 0.3.8.6). When I disabled it, middle-click returned to normal. I hope that solves your problem too.

rauj13 In reply to BoffinBrain [2011-09-08 14:12:45 +0000 UTC]
For me it was Greasemonkey. Two different plug ins (and we're not the only ones)... Expect v6.0.3 anyday now. Good news is that I can just use the plug-in version of this in the meantime though!

Interesting... So is that the fault of Mozilla or the extension developers?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
rauj13 In reply to BoffinBrain [2011-09-08 20:57:55 +0000 UTC]
Seeing as two separate plugins (probably more, seeing as we're not the only ones with the problem) produced the same bug, I'd say Mozilla. Especially since Tab Mix Plus hasn't updated in forever (May 11). I do feel sorry for you, I couldn't live without Tab Mix Plus. It's one of those "must-have" plugins.

I'd easily be able to live without it if it weren't for this 'bug', which is actually a feature they REMOVED from Firefox for no good reason: [link]

Nevermind. Turns out it's Greasemonkey as a whole. Which sucks, but at least I can use the Extension in the mean time.

Yes, I'm aware. When someone creates a proper Greasemonkey addon for Chrome that support the exact same API that is in Firefox, it will be fine.

Wow, I can't even remember what DeviantArt actually looks like anymore, I've been using this for so long!
It's so great, though, and it really does clean up everything you're looking at and puts it in an easily accessible and organized (not to mention aesthetic!) way while still keeping the original dA feel.
So, bravo!
